You may already be in love with Paper Pizazz® 12”x12” Overlays™, but we certainly haven’t forgotten about your mini albums! This week, Paris shares two brand new layouts plus clever ideas and helpful tips for attaching and using new 8”x8” Overlays™.

Giggle

Overlays make the quickest, easiest page titles. Paris oriented this background paper so the mosaic border runs along the top edge, accenting the overlay border with a cool backdrop. She placed the matted photo under the overlay, then used foam mounting tape to attach word fragments on top of the overlay for dimension. Paris accented the layout with strips of grosgrain ribbon and pewter brads–they secure the overlay to the page while adding tons of great texture and dimension.

“When adding an overlay to a page that has a lighter color scheme, sometimes the contrast between the black text on the overlay and the lighter colors throughout the rest of the layout can be very strong,” Paris says. “To balance the colors, try inking the edges of your paper elements with black to carry the darker color through the page. You can also use darker photos and computer journal or handwrite your journaling in black to balance the contrast.”

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Use the light blue mosaic border paper as the background, orienting the paper so the border runs along the top edge. Mat the photo on light blue texture paper, trim the mat to 1/8” and ink the edges with black. Mat again on lime texture paper, then trim the mat to 3/16” and ink the edges with black. Glue the matted photo just under the mosaic border.
  2. Lay the overlay over the page with the printed border running along the top edge. Cut a 3” length of lime grosgrain ribbon, trim the tails at an angle and fold the length in half. Use a pewter brad to attach the folded end of the ribbon to the top of the letter “i” in “Giggle”.
  3. Cut out the “brother” and “sister” word fragments and ink the edges with black, then use foam mounting tape to attach them over the bottom left and top right corners of the photo.
  4. Cut an 8” length of lime grosgrain ribbon and fold it in half. Use a pewter brad to attach the folded end of the ribbon to the center of the page, above the photo. Wrap the loose ends of the ribbon around the right edge of the page and secure them on the back. Computer journal the names onto lime texture paper, then cut to the same size as the word fragments and ink the edges with black. Use foam mounting tape to attach the journaling over the folded end of the ribbon, tucking the right end of the journaling under the brad.
  5. Cut a 10” length of lime grosgrain ribbon and fold it in half. Use a pewter brad to attach the folded end of the ribbon to the center of the page, under the photo. Wrap the loose ends of the ribbon around the left edge of the page and secure them on the back. Cut out the “best friends” word fragment and ink the edges with black. Use foam mounting tape to attach the fragment over the folded end of the ribbon, tucking the left end of the fragment under the brad.

Happy Birthday

On this “Happy Birthday” layout, Paris cropped the clear bottom off the “Happy” overlay, then placed the border through the center of the page rather than along an edge. She added solid cardstock squares behind the word “happy” so it’s visible enough to act as part of the “Happy Birthday” title. Coordinating 8”x8” papers, cardstock and artwork set a cheerful mood for this sweet layout.

“When using a background paper that has a darker color scheme or a heavier pattern, you can place a lighter, more solid paper behind the overlay border so the words are still visible,” Paris says. “Try cutting a strip of paper the same width as the border, then place it behind the border so all the words show up on top of it. You can also use smaller pieces of paper or cardstock to accent specific words, letters or images.”

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Use the yellow polka dot paper as the background. Mat the photo on rose cardstock, trimming the mat to 1/8”. Mat again on black cardstock, trim the mat to 1/16” and glue centered 1/4” down from the top of the page.
  2. Cut out the birthday cake and gifts/balloons artwork. Use foam mounting tape to attach the birthday cake artwork at an angle over the top left corner of the photo and the gifts/balloons artwork at an angle over the bottom right corner of the photo. Cut two 4” lengths of black grosgrain ribbon and trim the tails at an angle. Tie a knot in the center of each ribbon length and use Zots™ to attach one knotted ribbon above each piece of artwork.
  3. Cut a piece off the top of the overlay that includes the printed border and fits perfectly in the space between the bottom edge of the photo mat and the bottom edge of the page. Cut an 8”x1” strip of black cardstock and glue it 1/2” up from the bottom of the overlay. Cut out alphabet tiles to spell “birthday” and use foam mounting tape to attach the letters evenly across the black cardstock strip. Lay the overlay over the bottom of the page, flush against the bottom edge.
  4. Cut five 7/8” squares of rose cardstock. Mat each square on black cardstock, trimming the mats to 1/16”. Overlap the squares under the “happy” portion of the border printed on the overlay and glue to the background paper. Apply glue to the back of the overlay, only underneath the black cardstock strip to prevent the glue from showing through, then secure over the bottom of the page.
