How Does Your Garden Grow?

Whether it’s camping, backyard barbecues or gardening, one great way to bring the summer season into your scrapbook is to scrapbook your outdoor hobbies. Shauna’s “How Does Your Garden Grow?” layout does just that–with fun citrus flair! From tangerine and hot pink to lime green and ocean blues, bright papers and embellishments are perfect for summer scrapbooking.

Not only does this page feature fabulous color, but just look at all the texture! Shauna started by creating a playful border down the left edge of the page with an assortment of colorful, textured ribbons. She lined the edge of the background paper with cardstock to reinforce it, then punched a series of holes and ran alternating ribbons through the holes, knotting them on the front to boost the dimension. Shauna balanced the texture and dimension on the layout with a border of summer-themed words and images cascading down the right side of the page. Brads, buttons and foam tape add extra dimension while overlapping elements add movement and excitement to the layout.

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Use the summer color block paper as the background and ink the edges black. Cut out the stripe border, then cut off a 1/2" wide strip that includes the pink gingham and striped portions. Ink the edges of the cut off strip and glue even with the right edge of the page.
  2. Cut a 1/2"x12" strip of cardstock and glue it behind the left edge of the page. Punch a series of 23 evenly spaced holes down the left edge of the page, punching through both the paper and cardstock layers. Cut a total of 22 assorted ribbon lengths, each 3" to 4" long. Starting at the top, run one ribbon length through the first and second punched holes and knot in the front. Run another ribbon length through the second and third punched holes and knot in the front. Continue working your way down the page, alternating ribbons as you go.
  3. Mat a vertical 5"x7" photo on white cardstock, trim the mat to 1/16" and ink the edges. Mat again on gold textured paper, trim the mat to 1/4" and ink the edges. Glue the photo in the top left corner of the page. Ink the edges of the “How does your garden grow?” fragment and glue down the side of the photo.
  4. Cut out the word fragments, seed packets, citrus squares, postage stamps and gingham flowers from the artwork and ink the edges of each. Add the artwork pieces down the right side of the page, as shown, attaching some pieces with glue stick and others with foam tape. Run a length of embroidery floss through the holes on three yellow buttons, knotting the tails on the backside of the buttons. Use Zots™ to secure one button in the center of each of the gingham flowers. Add a yellow mini brad to one end of each of the word fragments.
  5. Use a black pen to journal the name and date throughout the artwork collage, then add journaling under the photo.

Summer Vacation

What does every child look forward to all year long? Summer vacation, of course! This “Summer Vacation” mini album page from Susan pays tribute to the fun and sun of summer vacation with hot colors and sweet, summery patterns. Tip: Summer vacation also makes a great theme for a whole 8"x8" album!

Susan created a unique mat for her summer photo by cropping a rectangle of paper into a tag shape, leaving lots of room along the bottom for embellishing. She wrapped the bottom of the tag with grosgrain ribbon, then added a large shoestring bow and used it as a space to add unique paper charms. That’s right, Susan cut out pre-printed tags from the paper collection, punched a hole in the top of each and added a metal jump ring to turn each tag into a sweet charm! Handmade charms, a safety pin and bright orange brads add a touch of dimension and metallic shine to this hot layout.

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Use the yellow with suns and circles border paper as the background, turning the paper so the border runs down the left side. Add an orange mini brad to the center of four sun shapes on the border.
  2. Cut a 4"x6" piece of blue with circles paper. Starting about 1" from the top edge, cut off the top left and top right corners of the blue with circles paper at a 45 degree angle to create a tag shape. Mat the tag on orange textured paper and trim the mat to 1/8". Mat a small photo on orange textured paper and trim the mat to 1/16". Glue the matted photo 2" from the bottom edge of the tag, then glue the “summer vacation” ribbon fragment overlapping the bottom edge of the photo. Cut a 5" length of lime grosgrain ribbon and wrap it around the bottom of the tag, about 3/8" below the “summer vacation” ribbon fragment. Glue the tag at an angle on the page.
  3. Mat the flip flop artwork on orange textured paper, trim the mat to 1/16" and glue overlapping the top of the large tag shape. Cut out the yellow surfboard tag and journal the date on it with a black pen. Glue the surfboard tag in the bottom right corner of the large tag shape, placing the tab over the lime green ribbon length. Add one orange mini brad to the tab. Journal the names in the circles on the background paper, just right of the large tag.
  4. Tie a 10" length of lime grosgrain ribbon into a shoestring bow. Cut out five of the skinny printed tags and punch a 1/16" hole in the tab of each. Use pliers to add one gold jump ring to each of the holes. Open a mini safety pin and thread the jump rings onto the pin, then run the pin through the center of the shoestring bow. Use Zots™ to secure the bow over the left end of the ribbon length on the large tag shape.
