The vintage trend is hot–and now you can add chic vintage flair to your mini albums with new Paper Pizazz® Vintage 8"x8" Papers! So just what makes a page “vintage”? Vintage doesn’t have to mean old photos–vintage style is great for heritage, retro and modern photos and everything in between. To add vintage style to your mini album, think colorful papers, familiar embellishments and shabby-chic distressing techniques.

Vintage style is big all over–not just the world of paper crafting. Pick up any clothing or home décor magazine and you’ll see many of the same vintage-inspired patterns and color schemes that you’ll see in paper crafting. The vintage trend comes to us straight from the popular ephemera trend. From the papers to the embellishments, the ephemera style is all about dark, neutral colors like blacks and browns. Now it’s time to lighten up! Papers patterned with wallpaper-style stripes and flowers in soft hues make a great background for vintage layouts. And what about the embellishments? They look like they’ve been plucked right out of Grandma’s sewing box! Buttons, ribbons, stitching, lace and silk flowers are big in vintage paper crafts. And yes, you can still use those tried-and-true embellishments we already know and love like brads and slide mounts!

So we’ve talked about the materials, but what about the techniques? From inking and sanding to crumpling, vintage style is all about distressing. The papers, alphabet tiles and artwork cut-outs in the Vintage 8"x8" Paper Pack come pre-printed with distressing like inking and scuffing. Want to add your own personality to your distressed projects? Try sanding your papers, photos and embellishments, then ink the edges with a brown or white ink pad. You might also try crumpling your papers, then flattening them out and using as is or inking them for unique photo mats.

Now that you know all the ins and outs of the trendy vintage style, take a look at two of Shauna’s latest vintage layouts, just for mini albums!

Rosie
By Shauna Berglund-Immel

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Ink the edges of one sheet of green with roses paper brown. Ink the edges of a 7 1/2" square of pink/ivory stripe paper and glue the paper centered over the green with roses paper. Cut a 2 3/4"x8" strip of brown with roses paper, ink the edges and glue it across the page, even with the top edge. Use a brown pen to add zigzag penwork overlapping the bottom edge of the pink/ivory stripe paper and the bottom edge of the brown with roses paper.
  2. Mat a vertical photo on brown textured paper, trim the mat to 1/16" and ink the edges. Mat the top and bottom edges on green with roses paper, trimming the mats to 3/8". Ink the edges of the green with roses mats and add faux stitching penwork along the top and bottom edges. Cut out the “love” word clip and clip it around the top left side of the photo. Glue the matted photo 7/8" from the left edge and 1/2" from the top edge of the page, then add the “officially fantastic” artwork in the bottom right corner of the photo. Journal the name vertically next to the photo in the bottom left corner of the pink/ivory stripe paper.
  3. Glue the “true friendship” and green with roses artwork centered over the right side of the pink/ivory stripe paper and journal the year above. Add the green with roses tag (with the pink striped section) centered above the other artwork, overlapping the seam between the brown with roses paper and the pink/ivory stripe paper. Tie a 9" length of pink sheer ribbon into a shoestring bow and use a Zot™ to attach the bow above the tag.

Dream Girl
By Shauna Berglund-Immel

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Use the brown/blue stripe with white paper as the background, positioning the white pattern in the bottom left corner. Glue the brown/aqua polka dot border across the page, 3" from the bottom edge.
  2. Mat a vertical photo on aqua textured paper, trim the mat to 1/16" and ink the edges brown. Mat again on dark brown textured paper, trim the mat to 1/4" and ink the edges white. Glue the photo in the top right corner of the page. Add the “What a happy day!” artwork overlapping the top right side of the photo and extending off the page, then trim the excess off the edge of the page. Fold the file folder into shape and glue the backside overlapping the bottom edge of the photo. Journal onto the “simply wonderful” and “special memory” labels. Glue the “simply wonderful” label overlapping the bottom edge of the photo, tucked slightly into the top of the file folder, and glue the “special memory” label over the front of the file folder.
  3. Journal on the "documentation" artwork with a black pen and glue in the top left corner of the page. Glue the “dream” word fragment across the top of the aqua tag, then journal “girl” over the bottom portion of the tag. Glue the tag at an angle to the left of the photo, placing the tag’s tab over the brown/aqua polka dot border. Hold together one 8" length each of white sheer and lavender sheer ribbon. Tie the ribbons into a shoestring bow and use a Zot™ to attach the bow above the tag.
