Double Petal Birthday Card
Designer: Laura Nicholas

Laura’s Tip: It looks as though I’ve stacked two flowers on top of each other, but this pretty focal point is actually one folded flower! I used a gorgeous teal glimmer paper for the flower and inked the edges of the petals. The inking is a subtle effect, but it really highlights each petal—a perfect way to add dimension.

Supplies:

Instructions: For the flower: Position the Double Petal template shape onto glimmer paper and trace, keeping your pencil next to the inner edge of the template. Cut out the flower shape along the outer edge of your pencil line.

Fold one petal inward on the inner fold line, then unfold.

Fold the outer area of that petal back along the crease line and keep it folded.

Working clockwise, start folding the large petals inward. As they begin overlapping, gently lift up the first petal to tuck the last petals in place.

Untuck the edges of the outer flaps where they may have overlapped. Ink the edges of the petals.

For the card: Cover the card front with the striped border paper, placing the border at the bottom of the card. Ink the edges of the card. Cut a 2” square of parchment paper, ink the edges and add black penwork stitching around the edges. Cut out a dark brown mat for the parchment square. Cut out the “special” tab and glue it to the left side of the parchment square, then glue the parchment square to the dark brown mat. Use a square brad to attach the flower to the center of the matted parchment.

Use foam tape to attach the parchment square to the card front, centering it in the middle of the brown texture portion. Cut out the “wishes” tab and glue it on the right side of the card front, along the top edge of the striped border.

To add the ribbon along the striped border: Open the card and place it face-up on a cutting surface. Use an X-acto® knife to cut a 3/8”-long vertical slit along the edge of the card fold, positioning the slit next to the striped border. Thread yellow ribbon through the slit, across the inside front panel of the card, around the outside edge of the card and tie in a knot on the card front.

For the card inside: Cut a 5”x6 1/2” piece of parchment paper, ink the edges and glue to the inside back panel of the card. Add penwork stitching around the edges. Cut out the Happy Birthday message and the friend tab and attach inside the card with foam tape.
