"Eye-catching embellishments are easy!" says Laura. "The patterns on the Fold-Back Swirls template feature an extra little fold so finished embellishments appear to have two layers. This template works especially well with paper that's patterned on one side and white on the other, like the mauve paper I used for the flowers. When you create that extra little fold, you'll be revealing the opposite side of the paper, so the smaller shape in the center of the embellishment will stand out with added contrast."

Instructions:
For the Card Front:

  1. Place the card with the fold on the left and trim 1" off the right side of the card front. Cover the remaining card front with roses paper and ink the edges brown. Run a length of dark green grosgrain ribbon across the card front, about 2" from the bottom edge, and add the "love" word clip.
  2. Use the template to trace three Cherry Blossom patterns onto the back of deep mauve textured paper. Cut out each shape and ink the edges, then follow the instructions printed on the template to fold each flower into shape. Fold a 2" length of ribbon in half and secure the loose ends behind one of the folded flowers. Repeat with two more folded ribbons for the two remaining flowers, then add a white brad to the center of each of the three flowers. Glue the flowers down the right edge of the card front with two above and one below the ribbon length.

For the Card Inside:

  1. Ink the edges of a 1 3/4"x6 1/2" strip of pink striped paper (stripes running horizontally), then glue the strip even with the right edge of the card inside. Use foam tape to attach two circular cut-outs over the bottom left edge of the strip.

It's A Friend Thing
By Laura Nicholas

"Sanding your folded shapes is a great way to add vintage style and make sure all the edges of the petals stand out," says Laura, "And it roughs them up enough for use on masculine projects, too!. I also like to add a brad or button to the center of the flowers for a little extra dimension and to make sure all the folded petals stay in place."

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Sand the edges of the brown floral paper and position the floral corner in the bottom left. Cut one filmstrip off the overlay sheet and mat it on tan textured paper, trimming the mat even with the edges of the filmstrip. Glue the filmstrip 1/4" from the right side of the page.
  2. Mat a 5"x7" photo on purple textured paper, trimming the mat to 1/8". Mat again on teal textured paper, trimming the mat to 1/8". Glue the matted photo at a slight angle overlapping the left edge of the filmstrip.
  3. Use the template to trace three Petal Wheel patterns onto the back of purple textured paper and one onto the back of teal textured paper. Cut out each shape and sand the edges, then follow the instructions printed on the template to fold each pattern into shape. Glue the folded embellishments down the filmstrip with one in each filmstrip frame. Run embroidery floss through the holes on four purple buttons, knotting the floss on the backside. Use Zotsâ„¢ to attach one button in the center of each folded flower.
  4. Run a 9" length of lavender sheer ribbon about 1 3/4" from the bottom of the page, wrapping the ends around the edges to secure on the back. Glue the backside of the file folder cut-out in the bottom left corner of the photo. Computer journal the date onto tan textured paper and cut to a small rectangle. Glue the journaling over the small brown tag and add zig zag penwork around the edges of the journaling. Glue the tag and the "it's a friend thing" cut-out to the front of the file folder. Tie a 7" length of ribbon into a shoestring bow and use a Zot™ to attach the bow over the top of the tag. Computer journal onto tan textured paper and crop to a small rectangle (about 2 1/4" wide). Add polka dot penwork around the edges of the journaling and glue the journaling inside the file folder.
