Summertime Spread
Designer: Shauna Berglund-Immel

Shauna says: I love the vintage look for summertime pages. And this spread shows that you can use softer colors and vintage embellishments like silk flowers and ribbon with masculine photos. Distressing techniques like inking and sanding are a great way to emphasize the vintage feel and give a more roughed-up effect to complement the masculine photos.

Instructions:
For the Backgrounds:

  1. From top to bottom: Mat the bottom edge of two 1 1/2"-wide strips of striped paper (stripes running vertically) on red glimmer paper, trimming the mats to 1/16".
  2. Glue blue dotted paper behind the bottom edge of each strip and trim to 1 1/2". Add a 1/16" mat of red glimmer along the bottom of each blue dotted strip.
  3. Glue floral paper behind the bottom edge of each dotted strip and trim to 3". Add a 1/16" mat of red glimmer along the bottom edge of each floral strip.
  4. Glue green dotted paper behind the bottom edge of each floral strip and trim to 2". Add a 1/16" mat of red glimmer along the bottom edge of each green dotted strip.
  5. Glue striped paper (stripes running vertically) behind the bottom edge of each green dotted strip and trim to 1 1/2". Add a 1/16" mat of red glimmer along the bottom edge of each striped strip.
  6. Glue ivory textured paper behind the bottom edge of each striped strip to complete two 12"x12" backgrounds.

For the Left Page:

  1. Ink the edges of the background. Run 13" of ribbon across the center of the floral strip, taping the tails to the back side. Mat a 5"x7" photo on red glimmer paper and trim to 1/16". Mat again on ivory floral paper, trim to 3/8" and ink the edges. Glue the photo over the right side of the page, centered between the two striped strips in the background. Add a mini brad to each corner of the photo and glue a circular flower cut-out overlapping the right edge.
  2. Computer journal summer-themed words onto white cardstock and ink the edges. Mat the top edge on green dotted paper, trim to 1" and ink the edges. Punch two 3/4" circles of floral paper and glue one on each end of the dotted mat. Add an embossed brad to the center of each circle, then glue the journaling to the left of the photo. Computer journal the year onto the small white tag and punch a 1/16" hole in the tab. Run embroidery floss through the hole and knot the ends to form a loop. Loop the floss around the left embossed brad and glue the tag in place to the left of the journaling.
  3. Computer journal a large "S", u and m onto scratch paper. Place the S on a light table or up to a window and layer the floral paper on top. Lightly trace around the edges of the S onto the floral paper. Cut out the S and add a thin mat of red glimmer. Repeat the technique using blue dotted paper for the u and green dotted paper for the m. Glue the letters across the bottom right edge of the page.
  4. Add a brad to the right end of the blue dotted strip in the background and another to the left end of the bottom striped strip. Punch a 3/4" circle of floral paper and ink the edges. Glue the circle over a white big brad and use the brad to attach a large silk flower to the left of the letter S.

For the Right Page:

  1. Ink the edges of the background. Run 13" of ribbon across the center of the floral strip, taping the tails to the back side. Mat a 5"x7" photo on red glimmer paper and trim to 1/16". Mat again on ivory floral paper, trim to 3/8" and ink the edges. Glue the photo over the left side of the page, centered between the two striped strips in the background. Add a mini brad to each corner of the photo and glue a circular flower cut-out overlapping the left edge.
  2. Computer journal the subjects' names onto white cardstock and crop to a small square. Double-mat on red glimmer, then green dotted paper, inking the edges of the green mat. Glue the names over the large dotted/floral tag. Glue the tag at an angle to the right of the photo with the tab positioned over the ribbon length. Tie ribbon into a bow and attach it over the tab with a Zot.
  3. Computer journal a large "m", e and r onto scratch paper. Use the technique from the left page to create a floral m, a blue dotted e and a green dotted r, each matted on red glimmer. Glue the letters across the bottom left edge of the page.
  4. Run a thin strip of white cardstock through the holes on a button. Use a Zot to attach the button over the right end of the blue dotted strip in the background. Add a brad to the left end of the green dotted strip and an embossed brad to the right end of the bottom striped strip. Attach a small silk flower in the top right corner of the page with a white mini brad.
  5. Computer journal time in a large script font. Place the journaling on a light table or up to a window and layer the page on top. Trace the word time in the bottom right corner of the page (just right of mer) with a black pen. Punch a 3/4" circle of floral paper, ink the edges and glue it over a white big brad. Use the brad to dot the letter i in time.
