Bohemian Style

by Sara Naumann

From flourishes and swirls to, birds and botanicals, the Bohemian Trend is super-stylish for scrapbookers and card makers.

Bohemian Technique: Layering
The Bohemian trend incorporates several tried-and-true techniques like sanding and inking—but layering is also a key part of the trend. Like the Bohemian fashion trend of layered clothing and mixed patterns, Bohemian paper crafting features layers of designs combined with an eclectic mix of patterns, from dots and stripes to swirls.

Love the look? Then take a cue from designer LeNae Gerig, who created two beautiful Bohemian-style projects: A card with mixed patterns and a layered butterfly, and a page featuring layers of stamped swirls and altered embellishments.

Thinking of You Card

Here, LeNae made a translucent butterfly by stamping directly onto a background paper with a scene.

Instructions:

  1. Cover the card with pink dot paper. Select an area from the bohemian green/pink floral paper with the bird and shadowed flowers. Cut into a 4 1/4"x5 1/2" rectangle and ink the edges.
  2. Stamp a set of large butterfly wings as shown. Thread three buttons with floss, making antenna with 3/4" long tails. Use Zots™ to attach the buttons in a row between the wings.
  3. Stamp “Thinking of You” in the upper left corner of the card. Tie a length of brown ribbon into a bow and Zot™ next to the card fold.

We Are So Alike Page

LeNae created layers with altered embellishments like this stamped silk flower. To stamp on the silk flower, first place it on scrap paper. Stamp the swirls across the front of the flower, placing one stamped image next to the other. Let dry for a few minutes before placing on the page.

Instructions:

  1. Cut a 5"x9 1/2" red floral rectangle and ink the edges. Glue the rectangle to the right side of the floral paper as shown. Stamp two overlapping swirls on the upper left side of the page.
  2. Mat the 6 1/2"x9 1/2" photo on brown cardstock and trim a 1/8" wide border. Adhere the photo to the page as shown, slightly offsetting the red paper. Stamp the swirls three more times, overlapping the photo, on the upper right side of the page. Stamp another swirl on the lower right and left as shown.
  3. Stamp the swirl border on the white flower. Layer with the small brown flower and a sanded embossed brad and secure at the bottom left. Add a green button and dated brown tag.
  4. Computer journal, print onto tan cardstock and cut into thin strips. Ink the edges brown and glue to the right side, extending into the photo.
  5. Sand the edges of the red big brad and secure the large brown flower. Once secured and flap, stamp a portion of a swirl on the center. Use Zots™ to secure sanded buttons to the page.
