As Gail settles in here at Hot Off The Press…I wanted to get a chance to find out a little more about her. You might have seen Gail in our webisodes, as she is taking over for Ann Barba.
Q: How did you discover the “therapy” of crafting?
A: I come from a family of eight children, and I get my artistic and crafting abilities from both of my parents. With such a large family we had a limited budget, so I learned to entertain myself by making things out of whatever was handy. I’ve done scrapbooking with paper grocery bags (and I was quite pleased with the results), and I’ve made magic wands out of old flashlights that would make Harry Potter envious.
Q: What do you love creating the most?
A: In paper crafting my favorite projects are usually cards, and when I can I like to put a lot of time into the small details. I also love origami and kirigami techniques, plus I share that love with my oldest son, Lance. I developed a love for quilting from my Mom and my Grandmother, and I do hand quilting on cold winter evenings, in front of the television. I love to draw too, and I am pleased to say that my youngest son, Connor shares that passion.
Q: How do you gather your inspirations for your projects?
A: I find that my greatest artistic motivations come from nature, so I naturally love spending time camping (in a tent) with my two boys whenever I can.
Q: Tell us about the first day at HOTP?
A: My first day here left me a little dazed with loads of new information (“these are Dazzles, not stickers”), but my new friends here have made me feel like part of the family. My work here at Hot Off The Press has given me the greatest opportunity to use my artistic side. Being on the design team is a great privilege because I’m working with such a creative team. I learn something new from the other designers every day. I’m sure that my webisode presentations will get better over time, but for such a small person, Ann really left some big shoes to fill.
Q: What are some of the things that are excited about being part of HOTP?
A: I love getting a “sneak peek” at upcoming paper packs (wait until you see them!) and figuring new ways to use them. I also love experimenting with the new tools, just like my Dad taught me (thanks Dad).
Q: What are some of your “new” favorites?
A: Embossing powders are my favorite must have when working on cards. They add such a classy look. I’m really starting to get hooked on Thin Line Dazzles too, because it’s so quick to add highlights with them.
Q: What is one of your favorite little tips?
A: I like to cut out artwork from a patterned paper and layer right back on top of the same artwork with foam tape. It adds dimension easily and highlights those beautifully decorated papers
Q: When you aren’t crafing what are some things you like to do:
A: When I’m not restoring my historic home, I’m spending time with my two wonderfully talented boys. We love playing board games best, reading like maniacs, hiking and geo-caching too – it’s fun, look it up! My latest big thrill is singing karaoke, and I do that whenever I can get friends together. I had the good fortune to win an opportunity to sing on stage with a fantastic band at the Hollywood Theater in Portland a couple of years ago. It was the thrill of a lifetime for me, and I have pictures to prove it!
Thanks for the opportunity to share, I guess it’s time for me to go “play” at work!
Thank you Gail for sharing! These are just a few of Gail’s beautiful projects. Please make sure you catch Paulette & Gail – each Wednesday, on our Weekly Webisodes!
And just remember – Being creative is NOT a hobby, it is a way of life!
Thanks for reading my little blog
Happy Birthday to my oldest son, Antonio
