Winter Rainbow at Paper Wishes!

I wanted to share this beautiful image with all of you! Here’s a spectacular double rainbow that owner Mike Jarvey spotted here at Paper Wishes. So glad he took a picture! As you can see, this rainbow ends at Paper Wishes’ warehouse – clear proof that there really is treasure at the end of the rainbow!

Paper Wishes Updates and November’s Design Challenge Winner!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! We celebrated here at Paper Wishes with an employee potluck (conveniently held next door to my office). And we definitely feasted – on everything from chili to cornpone to black-eyed peas and beyond. Everything was delicious! I’m so grateful the Paper Wishes Team is as adept in the kitchen as they are here at work! ;)

Now, Christmas season is upon us in full swing – woohoo! I’m feeling ahead in some respects, but behind in others. Remember my lofty aspirations of having Christmas cards finished by now? Ha! That has been rescheduled for this coming weekend, unless my 2-days-overdue-not-that-I’m-counting baby decides to arrive first! (Please………)

November’s “Less Is More” Design Challenge had participants creating a coordinating set of four ‘minimalist’ cards – a tall order for such a busy month! And we were rewarded with some beautiful entries. Our winner for November is Daria Sikorski (bbcmom)! Check out her stunning card set, below:

Designed by Daria Sikorski

Daria created her set using cardstock, Paper Artist™ 8 Circles & Scallops and 6 Layered Labels & 2 Swirls cutting dies, and several HOTP stamp sets including Kindred Spirits and Simply Susan! The contrast is so, so striking – impressive cards, Daria!!! Thank you for participating!

Paper Wishes Highlights:

  • I hope you’ve had a chance to watch this week’s webisode featuring Hunkydory’s Decadent Moments Luxury Card Kit! I love the whole ‘art deco’ look. To me, it just screams New Year’s (or any other special occasion)!!! Next week’s webisode will feature NEW Dee’s Distinctively cutting dies and let me tell you – the projects are amazing (as always) and not to be missed!
  • Saturday, December 6th is St. Nick’s Day and Paper Wishes will be offering some very special pricing on Santa stuff!!! Then Monday begins “It’s A Tasty Week…” National Pastry Day, Brownie Day and Ice Cream Day are all coming and we’ll be celebrating with delicious discounts on all the “tasty” things we have!
  • Also, December’s Design Challenge has been posted and I am sorry to say it will be our last Paper Wishes Monthly Design Challenge. A few forum members have expressed their regret over this, and I would like to say that while the challenge may be going away, we are actively looking into different ways to grow our Paper Wishes community and add additional channels for inspiration, creativity and learning! Exciting things are coming in 2015 so be sure to follow our blog for updates!

Have a fantastic weekend, and I truly hope you make a little time to create something you love!

Thankful For A Wonderful (Well-Documented) Family!

Thanksgiving is this coming Thursday, and personally, the one thing that I am most thankful for is my family. So rather than round up a bunch of cards embellished with fall leaves and turkeys, I thought I’d show you some of my favorite family-themed scrapbooking pages from the past year. These pages are all from Designer LeNae Gerig, and can be found on Paper Wishes’ Scrapbooking 101 site. If you haven’t visited before, or if it’s been a while, you need to take a look! The site is packed with lots of scrapbooking tips and tricks, articles and of course, project ideas! Click on each image below for supplies and instructions.

The thing I love about each of these pages is the layout! I love unique layouts, and I found each of these inspiring in some way.

As a parting gift, I’d like to share a short scrapbooking article by LeNae called Advice From A Been-There Beginner. LeNae offers some fabulous scrapbooking insight and wisdom. And by wisdom, I really mean the sense of fun that she imparts on scrapbooking. Her article made me laugh (patterned scissors!), and gently reminded me of all the reasons my inner perfectionist does NOT have to show up at my craft table! At least, not every time…

Paper Wishes Highlights:

  • Our webisode this coming Tuesday will feature one of my very favorite new products — Spectrum Noir™ Colored Pencils! These super-vibrant pencils are incredible for layering color.  Just wait until you see Gail’s Spectrum Noir™ Busy Bees Card – you’ll see what I mean!
  • We love our Paper Wishes customers! So in the spirit of “Thanks” and “Giving,” we’d like to offer you 20% off the highest-priced item in your order! Simply enter code: THX2014 at checkout to receive your discount! Now through Sunday!

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Let that inner perfectionist take a backseat, and make a little time to create something you love! Even if it’s a test-run of your pumpkin pie recipe! ;-)

Christmas Card Make-A-Thon!

Today we are two weeks from Thanksgiving and then Christmas Season is here!!! December always seems to pass so quickly, so this year I am deeming these next two weeks my Christmas Card Make-A-Thon!

The goal is to be finished with my Christmas cards before December 1st. What?! I know. Part of the reason is because I am expecting the arrival of a new baby girl (!) somewhere in the neighborhood of December 3rd. You can see the benefit to having my cards done in advance!

This year, to streamline the process a bit, I’ll be making use of Hot Off The Press’ Winter Wishes and Merry & Bright Artful Card Kits (ACK)! These holiday card making kits include coordinating papers plus lots of die-cuts and cut-outs. They also have a slightly more modern feel than those from Hunkydory. And now through Sunday, these Artful Card Kits are on sale for only $7.99 (regular retail $9.99)!

I feel like I’ve shared quite a few project ideas using Winter Wishes, but I don’t want to overlook our other new ACK, Merry & Bright!

Here is one more card that LeNae created, this time using the Winter Wishes ACK. I really like the simplicity of this card, as well as the contrast. I really, really like the idea of being able to easily create a number of vibrant and unique cards from a set of papers and die-cuts. The die-cuts make gorgeous embellishments on their own (foam tape is your friend), or if time allows you can add extra ribbon or whatever you choose!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend – it’s going to be a great chance to get started on some Christmas cards (and possibly assemble some freezer meals)! Make sure you take a little time to create something you love!

Feeling A Little Christmas-y….

I hope you’ve been enjoying our Week of Webisodes! It’s been a week packed with adorable Hunkydory Christmas projects and I am absolutely crazy for Hunkydory’s Contemporary Christmas card kit… I love the bold and bright colors paired with the little squirrels and foxes!  Pink, black and silver-foiled Christmas cardstock?! I have been seeing lots of slider cards lately and Gail has really done a fantastic job with this one! The little sliding reindeer spins and slides so freely – he just frolics all over the front of this card and I love it. Penny says, “I am one of the swaps team organizers on the message boards. Paper Wishes was my first on-line purchase when I started papercrafting 10 years ago. I’ve been very happy to watch PW expand its product line to include dies and stencils. This was my favorite challenge, I really enjoy any kind of 3D project so this was right up my alley.

Clearly Inspired Christmas Cards!

In this week’s webisode on WOW! Embossing Powders, Paulette and Gail featured two Christmas cards created with Heat Resistant Acetate and these projects were so gorgeous, I just had to show them off again! The lights in the studio are so bright that it can be difficult to tell just how much visual interest and texture these cards really have. I didn’t want you to miss out! Click on each image for instructions and supplies.

This first card actually uses the acetate in two different ways. The first piece of acetate is embossed with an embossing folder. Susan then dabbed Picket Fence Distress Paint onto the words from the back, and wiped away the excess. This gave her background a very cool chalkboard look that works well with the letterpress-style embossing folder.

THEN Susan took it another step further by die cutting her reindeer and snowflakes from acetate. She inked them with VersaMark™ and heat-embossed them with WOW! Opaque Bright White Embossing Powder. Check out the texture! I just love it!!!

Designed by Susan Cobb

This next card from LeNae has a sweet little snowman image heat-embossed onto the Heat Resistant Acetate with WOW! Metallic Gold Rich Ultra High embossing powder. Not only do I LOVE the gold and ivory combo, but again, the dimension and texture you get from the Ultra High embossing powder makes this card extra-special. You could even say it has has a real WOW-factor. Haha.

WOW! Ultra High embossing powders have a coarser grain than regular embossing powders which gives them fantastic height and dimension. I just love the little individual snow droplets too! No special technique required to create them—they are just stray embossing powder granules that LeNae left in place before heat-setting from the underside of the acetate. What an easy way to get a fabulous snowy effect! And notice the snowman shows up beautifully, even the fine lines.

And here is one more wintery card from our Ann’s Fall Look: Cutting Dies webisode a few weeks back. It’s a shaker card she created using Heat Resistant Acetate for the window. Using the Heat Resistant Acetate allowed Ann to heat-emboss the snowflake and ice skate images on the window front, and they look SO CUTE paired with her snowy shaker “filling” (White Encrusted Jewels embossing elements). For this card, Ann used our Super Fine White embossing powder which really helps to capture all the stamp details. The window frame was created with the Paper Artist™ Layering Frames cutting die set and a beautiful 12″x12″ Pearl Sheet that changes from pink to iridescent depending on the angle of light.

Heat Resistant Acetate gives you so many more creative options over standard acetate. I also wanted to share an awesome tip for working with acetate that Ann mentions in the instructions of yet another Acetate-Christmas Card (here).

Ann says: “To help the acetate lay flat on the front of the card, I scored two lines about 1mm apart and creased them well, creating a very narrow spine to fit over the card fold.”  This technique really does help your acetate flap to lay flat against the card—genius!

Click here to view even more ideas and inspiration for projects with Heat Resistant Acetate!!!

Not Your Normal Cards!

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you all enjoyed World Card Making Day! We had some fun contests and challenges, and the fun hasn’t ended! Right now you can still join our October Card Making Contest that takes place on the Paper Wishes Message Board and this month the challenge is to design a card that is uniquely shaped or folded! So I went in search of a little inspiration for you all! Don’t forget to click on each image for supplies and instructions!

This first card was designed by Teresa Welch, who always has a new folded card up her sleeve. This one is simple to create and uses Hot Off The Press’ new Winter Wishes Artful Card Kit (ACK). The easel portion simply gets propped up behind the adorable die-cut embellishments on the inside of the card.

Here is another card Teresa designed using the same ACK, combined with Silver Ripple holographic paper and Silver Jewel Dazzles™ stickers. The front focal flap lifts upward, and the lower circle-covered section unfolds, revealing a pocket inside the card! So cool! The pocket is perfect for a gift card or family photo!

This Oval Swing Card was created using the Oval Swing Card template and the Gingerbread ACK. The thing I love about these templates is that you can easily create an unlimited number of moveable cards IN ANY COLOR. No more plain white cards! Although as Teresa shows us below, sometimes white is still the perfect choice.

This spooky, sparkly Halloween card was designed by Debbie Samples, and features a blank Center Step Card as its base. The blank Center Step cards have been pre-cut and even pre-folded for your convenience! Just dive right in and start decorating (my favorite part)! Debbie used Hot Off The Press’ Halloween Papers along with the Twisted Tree Cling Rubber Stamp and Spoonful of Midnight Embossing Powder & Elements from Stampendous to create this haunting look!

This card is not quite as seasonal as the others, but it’s a beautiful example of a Cascading Card and why not show a little love year-round?! The front pulls out accordion-style for display, and the folding panels give you lots of options for embellishing. This card was created with Hot Off The Press’ Red Velvet Paper Pack and Sweetie Pie Dazzles™, as well as the Paper Artist Love and 5 Hearts cutting die set.

And a final example of of a very cool Double-Fold Pop-Out Card! I love this card – the Butterfly Garden ACK papers are beautiful, and I love the symmetry of the pop-out section. Lots of visual impact here!

So – are you ready to learn the real reason behind my sudden folded-card fixation? Here at Paper Wishes, we have been working hard on a brand new DVD! Teresa’s Uniquely Folded Cards DVD has been scheduled for release in January! And trust me, it is packed with tons of projects that you are going to want to create, so mark your calendars and dust off your rulers!!!
