Girlfriends Getaway Wrap Up + Photos!

gfgsetup-pan

Well friends, I’m happy to report that this year’s Girlfriends Getaway was a fabulous success! We had 167 attendees joining us from near and far for a full day of creating with Paulette. Many participants chose to extend their card making and scrapbooking into Sunday as well, making for a very memorable weekend!

gfg_4596

Our girlfriends created a total of 6 projects led by Paulette, with Gail stepping in to share some of the fun!

gfg_4607

gfg_4619

It was a wild and fun day filled with lots of freebies and giveaways! A delicious lunch was provided by Ebner’s Custom Meats, a family-owned, local establishment, and our girlfriends also enjoyed a build-your-own cheesecake station — a new addition at this year’s event!

Hot Off The Press brings all their latest products to Girlfriends so participants can get “extras” of anything they love—without having to pay for shipping! There are also lots of bargains to be found, with tables for “Dollar & Under Items,” “Gently Used Stamps,” and even Dollar Dazzles™!

Another highlight was the attendance of several Paper Wishes Message Board members. These women (wearing the pink shirts) create and communicate through our message boards, often daily, and finally were able to meet Paulette and each other in person! Very cool.

In addition to all the creativity, Girlfriends Getaway is also a family affair. Paulette’s husband, Mike, and son, Adam, were both there for Friday’s setup and to lend a hand on Saturday. This year Adam brought his massage chair, offering professional neck and arm massages.

Even little Penelope stopped by to help draw winners! Paulette shared with me that Penelope wanted to stay, even when presented with a “toy store” option—such star potential!

If you couldn’t attend Girlfriends this year, you can still be a part of the fun with your very own Girlfriends Getaway 2015 Kit! As I mentioned before, Paulette really does spend all year scouting out the best new products specifically with Girlfriends Getaway in mind. She also discovers new ways to use some of our favorites, and she shares all of this in her Girlfriends Getaway Kit which also includes Paulette’s DVD with step by step video instructions!

Supplies are limited—get yours now!

Overall, I’d like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who attended (and helped with) this year’s event! It was such an amazing group of wonderfully creative people, and I’m already looking forward to next year!

Swirl Frame Embossed Card + Search Our Blog!

Happy Monday to you all, and I have a new card to show you…

But business first. The Paper Wishes Blog now has a search bar—look on the top right. HOORAY!!! Now you can search previous blog posts for cardmaking ideas, event info and whatever else you might be looking for. 🙂

Now onto the project. I actually made this quick birthday card at home for my mom! As many of you know, I have three daughters—ages 3, 2 and 9 months! Being able to make a card, even a simple one, is a miracle in and of itself! But when you work at Paper Wishes, you no longer have the luxury of buying cards!! 😉

whalecardweb

Supplies:

This card was pretty straightforward—the whale image was stamped and clear-embossed onto white cardstock, and then inked with Peacock Feathers Mini Distress Ink. I filled in the little heart with Red Stickles™ glitter glue.

Now obviously you could have “blinged out” this card a whole lot more, but a) time was a factor and b) I really just wanted the embossing to stand out! The Swirly Frame embossing folder is one of my favorites because it’s gorgeous and it frames any focal perfectly!

Swirl Frame Embossing Folder (Hot Off The Press)

I’ll be trying to bring you lots of cardmaking ideas in the near future because… we have less than 2 weeks until World Cardmaking Day! Yikes, how did that happen? So stay tuned, because we will soon be announcing details for our World Cardmaking Day Challenge!

I hope you all have a wonderful (and creative) week! Thanks for stopping by!

The Girlfriends Are Here!

Yesterday Hot Off The Press & Paper Wishes welcomed sisters Karen Lacina and Jo-Anne Brintrup, who traveled all the way from Florida and New York to join us for our 2015 Girlfriends Getaway!

These fabulous ladies wanted to come here and meet Paulette, and the rest of the Paper Wishes family, so Paulette gave them the grand tour. They met Gail and the rest of our in-house designers, cameraman John, myself and I’m sure a host of others!

I just wanted to quickly share this great photo that Karen was kind enough to share with me. It was taken out in the studio where we film our webisodes, and it’s absolutely adorable!! <3

These ladies are loyal Paper Wishes VIPs with so much enthusiasm, both for creating and for all things Paper Wishes! Their excitement for Hot Off The Press & Paper Wishes was very touching to me, because we do work hard here to bring inspiring products and ideas to all our Paper Wishers! Thanks again ladies, you really made my day!

Now off to help set up for the big day! Happy Friday!

Girlfriends Getaway is one of the few opportunities to meet Paulette and learn all of her tips and tricks in person. And if you watch the webisodes, you know that when it comes to paper crafting, she’s an expert! In addition to this, there are massive amounts of door prizes, freebies and giveaways.

One of last year’s winners trying to fit her very big prize in her very small car! :)

And the projects…. Each year Paulette chooses her favorite project ideas and craft products. She then incorporates the “best of the best” into your Girlfriends Getaway projects! It’s unbelievable fun and participants get to try all kinds of new techniques! We’re sold out for this year, but as I said before, put it on your list for next year!

Serenity Scrapbooking Collection + Project Ideas for Fall Crafting!

Autumn is quickly approaching, and I can almost smell those pumpkin lattes!

With fall practically here, Hot Off The Press’ release of the Serenity Scrapbooking Collection is perfectly timed. The rich colors are perfect for autumn, and the motif works beautifully for feminine and masculine cards! The level of detail in the artwork gives this set an elegant, natural look.

Serenity also features some gorgeous, bird-themed items. I’ve loved birds since my college Ornithology class, so I’m definitely excited to bring a few feathered friends into my crafting! Just take a look…

Card Making Idea: Flower Inside/Out Die-Cut Card

Look at this card! Susan designed it using Hot Off The Press’ Inside/Out Flower Die-Cut Cards, and it’s a really wonderful example of just how easy these cards make it to unleash some serious creativity.

flycardfront-sc

4103448_1

Designed by Susan Cobb

Designer’s Tip: Cover the flower die-cuts with contrasting patterned papers, then embellish the flower center with several tiny Dazzles™ flowers. Use the Dazzles™ swirls to decorate the large flower frame.

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Front: Fold the Inside/Out Flower Die-Cut card in half on the scored line. Now fold the left side of the front back (to the left), so the large flower shape extends on the right side. Cover the left side of the card front with Artful Watercolor striped paper. Trim the excess from the inside of the flower opening even with the card.
  2. Cover the large flower frame with Artful Watercolor purple/pink textured paper, trimming the edges even. Ink the edges with Plumeria ink as desired. Align the flower frame with the flower shape on the card front, just for placement. Add Artful Affirmations Dazzles™ swirls on the upper left and lower right edges of the flower frame, and trim the swirls even with the edges of the frame as shown. Foam tape the flower frame on the card front. Add Dazzles™ borders on the top and bottom edges of the striped paper. Place the large Dazzles™ butterfly on the teal portion of Artful Watercolor teal/green textured paper and trim evenly around the edges. Foam tape the body of the butterfly on the lower left edge of the frame.
  3. Inside: Cover the inside of the card with Artful Watercolor blue paper and ink the edges with Plumeria ink. Cut a 5” length of 1/8” wide teal grosgrain ribbon and glue it even with the right side of the card. Cover the medium sized solid flower die-cut with Artful Watercolor dark pink textured paper. Ink the edges with Plumeria ink. Place centered on the inside of the card, then close the card and adjust the petals so they are aligned with the flower opening from the front. Glue in place.
  4. Cover the small flower die-cut with the teal portion of the Artful Watercolor teal/green textured paper. Ink the edges with Plumeria ink. Foam tape centered on the dark pink flower. Place Dazzles™ tiny flowers clustered on the center of the small flower. Place “fly” on the bottom of the dark pink flower. Back the two small butterflies with Artful Watercolor purple or blue paper and glue near the dark pink flower as shown, making sure they don’t show from the front when the card is closed. Add “love more” and “worry less” near the lower left corner as shown.

Not only are these blank die-cut cards incredibly fun to work with and decorate, but they also make it easy to showcase some of your favorite papers! Susan used contrasting Artful Watercolor scrapbooking papers, and you can see five different, coordinating papers even with the card closed! It’s kind of amazing when you think about it! I thought this was such a beautiful card that I just had to share. Thanks for stopping by!

Happy Anniversary, Mike and Paulette!

This last week, Paulette and her hubby Mike celebrated their anniversary. Most anniversaries are special, but theirs is just a little bit extra special.

Mike and Paulette met during Paulette’s first year of college. Mike, a young Marine, was out with two fellow Marines, all trying to meet girls (of course)! The three men serendipitously arrived at the dorm where Paulette was visiting with friends, and destiny took over. Paulette spent most of that evening talking with… not Mike. But by the end of the evening, Mike persevered, asking for (and receiving) Paulette’s phone number. It would only take him several weeks to muster the courage to actually call her!

But then destiny really did take over. After dating for six weeks, Mike (who would soon be deployed overseas) asked Paulette to marry him. To which she replied, “I’ll have to think about it!” And indeed, Paulette, 19 years old at the time, would marry Mike 6 weeks later.

mikeandpaulette

In Paulette’s office, a photo from the early days.

They would only be married for 6 weeks when Mike would be deployed overseas. Just before he left, Mike brought Paulette a vase and told her that she would be receiving something special. That next Saturday, and every Saturday that followed, Paulette received a single rose for her vase, a token of love from her husband nearly half a world away. Mike was first deployed in Japan, and would also be sent with the first wave of troops to arrive in Vietnam. They wrote back and forth daily, sent recorded tapes to each other, and no doubt missed each other dearly.

Mike returned to the US, and the first Christmas tree they shared as a married couple was decorated with the bows that had come from each of the roses. Paulette had saved them.

It was a chance encounter that easily could not have happened, but it did. Now each year on their anniversary, Mike sends Paulette a red rose for every year they’ve been married with one pink rose to begin the next year. What a guy!!

PJsrosesCU

Happy Anniversary, you two! It’s clear you share a love that is very, very special!

Pop-Up Box Card with Gold Shadow-Stamped Acetate!

Happy Wednesday! Here’s a gorgeous card that you might not have seen! Gail designed it for our Stamping 101 page—if you haven’t visited before, you should take a look. Stamping 101 features stamping basics, plus more advanced techniques, helpful hints, information on ink pads and of course, more projects!

Designed by Gail Booth

Designed by Gail Booth

Designer Tip: Stamping on acetate with Metallic StazOn® can be slippery, so use light pressure. I used a color printer to journal “Mom” on the back panel, but black would work fine, or you could write “Mom” with a burgundy colored marker.

Supplies:

Instructions:

1. Card base: Cut six 2½”x2½” and one 2½”x5½” Roses & Lace green lace papers. Use Gold StazOn® to stamp the lace border centered at the bottom of three square pieces and the one long piece, then mat all of the pieces on the large pink rose paper with 1/8” borders. Follow the die-cut pop-up box instructions to assemble the box with Ultra Tape, but don’t install the inner supports yet. Close the box and lay flat on your work surface. Glue the stamped matted pieces onto the bottom panels with the long piece on the back panel (the one without an upper scored flap), then the remaining pieces onto the upper flaps (these will flop downward when the box is opened).

2. Card front: Open the box with the flaps down and the long panel at the back. Cut four 2 5/8”x2 5/8” pink lace papers. Journal “Mom” in burgundy on the center right side of one piece. Stamp the lace border in gold centered at the bottom of three pieces and at the top of the “Mom” piece, placing the scalloped edge on the edge of the paper. Cut 1/16” around the scalloped edge of the stamped lace, then mat all of the pieces on burgundy lace paper with 1/16” borders. Punch holes along the straight edge of the stamped lace, 1/8” from each side, and two holes centered at each scalloped valley, as shown. Lace with 1/8” ivory grosgrain, tying a bow at the center of two pieces. Glue the stamped matted pieces onto the three folded down panels and the “Mom” piece on the back panel, with the lace on the outer edge of each panel, and the bows on the center panels, as shown.

3. Supports: Stamp the lace border in gold centered at the top of two 2¾”x1½” green lace papers. Cut 1/16” around the scalloped edge of the stamped lace, then glue the strips even with the bottom of the two inner supports. Ultra Tape the two supports in place, as shown on the pop-up box instructions, close to the top open edge of the box (the lace edges extend above the opening.

4. TECHNIQUE: Shadow Stamping on Acetate: Stamp “Thinking of You” and “Wishing You a Beautiful Day” in gold on the heat resistant acetate, then stamp the same images over the first ones again with Scarlet SurfaceZ ink, offsetting the image up and to the right a bit for a shadow effect. Let dry, then cut out the sentiments and Zot™ onto the front and back panels, as shown. Use the same technique to stamp several small flowers, butterflies, hearts and scrolls. Cut out around the edge of each stamped image.

5. Zot™ ¼” wide strips from the acetate that comes with the pop-up box onto the backs of the pieces and Zot™ the other end of the strips onto the backs of the supports, arranging the pieces as shown. Zot™ on a scroll on the back panel and two tiny butterflies on the front and back panels.

This card is just stunning, and our Pop-Up Box Die-Cut Cards will deliver flawless results! I hope you’re feeling inspired and ready to do a little creating of your own! Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

Using Amazing Sticky Stencils with Gelatos!

Earlier this summer, I asked our in-house designers what were some of their favorite new craft products, and LeNae immediately declared, “Sticky Stencils!” So naturally I had to try them out for myself! I was so impressed that I just had to show you too, along with a technique that utilizes the wonderful “sticky” properties of these stencils!

Sticky stencils, as you might expect, are sticky on one side. Simply peel them off their backing sheet, and press onto your project (I like to press the center down first, and work outward). Once it’s in place, you’re ready to go, and because the entire stencil is sticky, you use a more watery medium for your stenciling without having to worry about it bleeding underneath. No taping down required! The “Beautiful” stencil is from the Beautiful Words Sticky Stencil Set (which I LOVE).

beautiful

For my stenciling, I just scribbled a bit of green Gelatos® onto my “craft sheet” (below). Then swirl in your Water Brush (or wet paintbrush) to make a paint!

gelatospaint

fillingin

Just fill in your stencil and fear not!—your sticky stencil will keep your Gelatos paint from bleeding. Peel your stencil up to see the magic! Sticky stencils peel up perfectly, without harming your project. Then just wash them (I let mine air dry) and place them back onto the backing sheet—they’re still sticky!

You can see in my top picture, the wording it is still a little wet on the edges, but it dries quickly for that great watercolor look! Another neat thing about this technique is that once you’ve done your stenciling, you’ll probably have a little Gelatos® paint left over, and you can use it with your brush to carefully “connect” your lines where the stencil breaks up the image, allowing for a more continuous look! So fun, and especially great for word stencils like these!

beautifulwordsstencil

Click here to view the product page

I’ve been having a blast playing with these sticky stencils—they make it easier than ever before to stencil a “beautiful” image! I truly consider them a miracle product and can’t wait to try them with other colorants. Paper Wishes® has lots of sticky stencils—click here to see them all. We even have sticky stencil sheets, so you can design your very own custom sticky stencils using your cutting dies, a craft knife or your Silhouette machine! Now I better quit “playing” and get back to work! Thanks for stopping by!
