New HOTP Stamp Set Featured In Scrap & Stamp Arts Magazine With Projects From Sara Naumann

Flipping through July’s issue of Scrap & Stamp Arts, I came across something wonderful—new cards from Sara Naumann featuring HOTP’s Postcards stamp set! Talk about a win-win! In the article, Sara shares her technique for painting with pigment ink. And it’s not just a good read – the projects are wonderful too! Here’s a peek at two of her cards that were featured:

Gorgeous! I know I’ve said it before, but I really enjoy Sara’s “light & bright” style, and I’m especially in love with the contrast on her second card! Below is a look at the stamp set that was used:

The postcards are so lovely and detailed, and all the little accent stamps are perfect for adding your final touches. Be sure to check out Sara’s article to learn more about painting with pigments, and to see the rest of her cards! And for even more ideas, watch our webisode featuring this stamp set, below. You’ll see a great idea for using them on a scrapbook page as well!

For me, it’s always exciting to see what others are creating! If you’re feeling as inspired as I am, just pick up your Postcards stamps, some Artful Watercolor scrapbooking paper and July’s issue of Scrap & Stamp Arts (on sale now!), and you’ll be ready to go! Take care!

Artful Watercolor Card Making Project Using Triple Label Easel Template

Hello everyone! After all of the National Scrapbooking Day excitement, I feel that a great card making project is definitely in order! Our last Week of Webisodes was full of Ann Barba’s stunning projects, and here’s one of my favorites! This card was featured on Day 1: New HOTP Templates. Ann used a couple of brand new products from Hot Off The Press including the new Label Triple Easel Card template, along with our so, so pretty Artful Watercolor scrapbooking papers – take a look!

Designer’s Tip: On easel cards, it’s fun to have things going above the easels (or labels in this case) so that you can easily see them once the card is fully set up. And the little bird on the smallest label is actually part of the background paper!

Supplies:

  • Label Triple Easel Card Template (link)
  • Made By Me Stamps (link)
  • Artful Watercolor Paper Pack (link)
  • Artful Watercolor Ribbons (link)
  • 8″x8″ Cardstock (link)
  • Ivory 3mm adhesive pearls (link)
  • Zing! Lavender Opaque Embossing Powder (link)
  • VersaMark™ ink pad (link)
  • Jet Black StazOn® ink pad (link)
  • acrylic block (link)
  • heat gun (link)
  • Perfect Printing Pouch (link)
  • white cardstock (link)
  • Zots™ adhesive dots (link)
  • glue stick (link)
  • foam tape (link)
  • scissors (link)
  • craft knife (link)
  • metal-edged ruler (link)
  • cutting mat (link)
  • fine-tip black pen (link)

Instructions:

  1. Cut all 3 bases out of white cardstock. Score and fold along the fold lines.
  2. Large base: Fold the base closed; place with the fold on the top. Cover the top section (above the middle score line) with dark purple textured paper.
Medium base: Cover the top section with dark purple watercolor paper.
Small base: Cover the top section with blue watercolor paper.
  3. Large label: Cut the label from purple floral paper and mat on pink cardstock, leaving a 1/16″ border. Cut a medium label from pink/purple watercolor paper. Swipe the Perfect Printing Pouch over it. Stamp a swirl in the upper right and lower left with VersaMark™ ink. Stamp the greeting in the center. Emboss with lavender embossing powder. Mat onto teal cardstock with a 1/16″ border. Foam tape to the center of the large label. Cut around one of the white flowers on the purple floral paper. Mount it on purple cardstock and trim close around the edges (leave no border). Foam tape the flower to the upper left of the large label, overlapping the medium label (you’ll need 2 layers of foam tape toward the outer edges). Apply 3mm adhesive pearls around the center of the white flower and 1 on each swirl as shown. Tie a bow with the tan and fuchsia twine and Zot™ to the bottom right of the medium label.
  4. Medium label: Cut the medium label from watercolor ephemera paper with a half of a butterfly wing showing on the left side. Mat onto teal cardstock with a 1/16″ border. Stamp “Count your life by smiles, not tears” on blue watercolor paper, and cut out in a rectangle. Mat on purple watercolor paper with a 1/16″ border and foam tape to the right side of the label. Add a small row of adhesive pearls to the top right and bottom left of the sentiment.
  5. Small label: Place the small label shape of the template over the watercolor ephemera paper with the green bird going off the top left of the label. Trace the label with a pencil. Remove the template and cut around the label and around the bird. Erase any pencil lines. Mat the piece on pink cardstock, leaving a 1/16″ border around the label shape but no border around the bird. Stamp “Count your age by friends, not years” on purple watercolor paper, and cut out in a rectangle. Mat on teal cardstock with a 1/16″ border and foam tape to the right side of the label as shown. Add a small row of adhesive pearls above and below the sentiment.
  6. Assembly: Assemble all the pieces (except the stopper) of the Triple Label Easel card according to the template instructions.
  7. Covering the bases: Cut 4″x4 5/8″ horizontal stripe paper. Slice 1 3/8″ off the top and glue it to the space between the large and medium easels, sliding it slightly underneath the fold of the medium easel base. Slice off another 1 1/8″ and glue in between the medium and small easels, sliding it slightly underneath the fold of the small easel base so that no white is showing. Try to match it up perfectly with the previous piece. With the remaining 2 1/8″ of stripe paper, cover the front section under the small easel, aligning it with the previous strip so that no white is showing. Trim any excess.
  8. Stopper: Stamp the “Homemade with love” label on blue watercolor paper, and cut around. Mat on purple watercolor, leaving a rectangle mat. Mount on white cardstock (for sturdiness), leaving no border. Foam tape centered to the card, 1/4″ from the bottom edge. Sign the label before delivering.

I love this card for a lot of reasons, but I really appreciate how many elements actually came from the paper itself. Our art director, Kyla, shared with me that these papers actually feature hundreds of individual layers of artwork, and that’s one of the reasons these papers can truly stand alone. Any embellishing just takes them to the next level, making these papers an awesome choice for easy, gorgeous card making!

This Sunday is Mother’s Day, and I would like to wish all our moms out there a beautiful day! Moms (and Grandmas too!) are so busy these days. Being a mother of three girls under three years old, I get it! So relax and let everything go for just one day and who knows? Maybe you will get to make a big, crafty mess with the perfect excuse to leave those supplies out!

Happy Mother’s Day! And to my own mom who just had to be in Hawaii for Mother’s Day, “Aloha!”

PROJECT: Heart Triple Easel Card from Teresa Welch

Today I’m sharing with you an incredible card from designer Teresa Welch (and I’m pretty certain that incredible is the only kind of card that woman makes!) It was featured on our webisode back in January – take a look!

MKT_15JAN.WOW1-TWcd4a MKT_15JAN.WOW1-TWcd4b

Supplies:

  • Emma’s Garden Double-Sided Scrapbooking Papers (link)
  • Dark brown cardstock (link)
  • Emma’s Flower Garden Dazzles™ Stickers (link)
  • Heart Triple Easel Die-Cut Cards (link)
  • 5 mm ivory pearl stickers (link)
  • 3 mm ivory pearl stickers (link)
  • Foam tape (link)
  • Adhesive (link)

Instructions:

  1. For the card: Place your large base with the fold at the top. Glue 4 3/8″x2 5/8″ Emma’s Garden tan diamonds paper centered on 4½”x2¾” dark brown cardstock. Glue to the large base along the upper fold. Place 4 3/8″ Dazzles™ border across the tan diamonds paper ¼” from the top. Cover the inside with Emma’s Garden brown diamonds paper.
  2. Place your medium base with the fold at the top and cover the inside with brown diamonds paper. Place your small base with the fold at the top and cover the inside with brown diamonds paper. Glue the bottom edge of the medium base centered along the bottom edge inside the large base. Glue the small base centered along the bottom edge inside the medium base.
  3. Place a corner flower Dazzles™ on the Emma’s Garden papers shown. Cut along the Dazzles™ edges as shown and glue to the lower right corner. Back the single flower Dazzles™ as shown and place on the lower left. Foam tape a 5/8″ Dazzles™ flower centered near the bottom edge as shown.
  4. For the large heart: Cover the large heart die-cut with dark brown cardstock. Trace the large heart pattern onto Emma’s Garden teal floral paper. Cut out and glue to the center. Back the flower Dazzles™ shown with Emma’s Garden papers and glue as shown. Place “hello friend” Dazzles™ across the center. Place the pearls on the flower centers as shown, and set aside.
  5. For the medium heart: Cover the medium heart die-cut with dark brown cardstock. Trace the medium heart pattern onto Emma’s Garden tan diamonds paper. Cut out and glue to the center. Back the Dazzles™ rose with Emma’s Garden papers and glue as shown. Place two small Dazzles™ flowers and pearls as shown, and set aside.
  6. For the small heart: Cover the small heart die-cut with dark brown cardstock. Trace the small heart pattern onto Emma’s Garden pink floral paper. Cut out and glue to the center. Back the 1¾”x7/8″ Dazzles™ flower with Emma’s Garden papers and glue at the lower right. Place Dazzles™ “thinking of you,” small flowers, and the pearls as shown.
  7. Assembly: Glue the bottom of the small heart aligned with the matching point on the front of the small card base front. Close the medium base and glue the bottom of the medium heart aligned with the front medium card base, making sure the small heart is covered when the card is closed. Repeat to glue the large heart in place, making sure it covers the other hearts. Fold each base to display the card as shown.

Honestly, I am really impressed with this card as it is so lovely, but the supply list is still so short! Sometimes, gorgeous paper and some coordinating Dazzles™ are all it takes! Teresa herself designed these adorable Triple Heart Easel Cards and now you’ll have two different ways to make them! The card above was created using the Heart Triple Easel die-cut card package below. These come in a pack of three, and are SO MUCH FUN because you dive right in and start decorating. It’s instant gratification – who doesn’t love that?!

But! Sometimes we dream of making a black card. Or a pink card. Or any color besides white! So in one week, our Summer 2015 Paper Wishes catalog will feature several new templates including Hot Off The Press’ new Heart Triple Easel Card Template, making it simple to create these magnificent cards in any color!

As I said before, this template will be available when our new catalog comes out next Friday. But do you know what I really don’t like? When somebody shows me something that I can’t buy yet. So frustrating! But don’t worry friends, I’ve got you covered!  Today I found a sneaky way for you to get this template before it’s released, and two more, below!

This bundle of items is already available on the Paper Wishes website! Mysterious circumstances perhaps, but it’s there for you to take a look! The Star Triple Easel Card Template you see above is equally amazing, and the Center Step Card Template is a best-seller that’s already available. I hope you find this cardmaking project as awesome as I do! May it inspire you to create one of your own! Have a wonderful weekend!

Coloring Technique: How to Use NEW Spectrum AQUA™ Watercolor Markers

Notice anything different? YES! Paper Wishes’ blog has a beautiful, clean new look and I just love it! What a wonderful place for showing you all the beautiful projects and all the behind-the-scenes fun that happens here at Paper Wishes!

As you probably know, Paper Wishes’ 2015 Spring Mini Catalog is out! I was looking through mine today, and one of my favorite projects is Susan Cobb’s Hogs & Kisses Card – take a look!

Hogs & Kisses Card by Susan Cobb

This card just blows me away! I’m a huge fan of the Emma’s Garden papers, I love the new Hogs & Kisses small stamp and I always love Susan’s attention to detail. The most exciting part, however, is the coloring that was done with the new Spectrum AQUA™ markers! These water-based markers are designed to give you a watercolor look (in a convenient marker format) and they come in four different color sets:

PW_15WIN.fillip-4001198.spectrum-aqua.floral.pg8 PW_15WIN.fillip-4002528.spectrum-aqua.primary.pg8 PW_15WIN.fillip-4001126.spectrum-aqua.nature.pg8 PW_15WIN.fillip-4000378.spectrum-aqua.essentials.pg8

I was anxious to find out what our Design Team thought of them, so I went back and pestered Gail into doing a quick demonstration of just how these pens work. The pens have both a brush tip, and a very fine tip that’s perfect for outlining and detail work!

Fine Tip

Gail tested these on watercolor paper since the markers are meant to be combined with water. On the left, Gail first shows how the pens write and blend without using any water. The right side, however, shows the real magic of these watercolor markers!

To get this look, Gail has scribbled her pens onto an acrylic stamping block, and added a small amount of water to create a paint. This paint can then be picked up with a paintbrush or water brush (another cool tool) and used to color your projects.

Project Ideas Using Happy Days Scrapbooking Papers and Paper Dolls Stamp Set

It’s always exciting to see what others are creating with Hot Off The Press products! Today I came across the February/March 2015 issue of Scrap & Stamp Arts, and was thrilled to see a great article featuring mixed-media collage artist Sara Naumann showing how she uses the Perfect Airbrush spritzer for backgrounds, stenciling and more! For those of you don’t know, Sara was also our previous marketing manager and webisode presenter!

Using New Inka-Gold Wax Paste With Stencils

stencil, wax paste, embossing paste, card making, cardmaking

Created by Susan Cobb

Happy Friday everyone and thanks for stopping by! Today marks the first day of spring and I am soooo ready for it! For me, spring is generally that time of year when I like to incorporate a bit of new-ness into my own life. Maybe we’re supposed to do that in January, but nope, not me. In January I’m still hibernating.

But then spring arrives, and I start feeling ready for something new. And preferably colorful. Something like these new Inka-Gold Wax Pastes!

Now, there is a little need-to-know background info I’d like to share about myself before we go on… Yes, I make cards. Yes, I can cobble together a scrapbook page. But my day job? I write, I edit, I proofread. I love to find errors. But a professional crafter I am not. So if I can be successful with this fun, colored paste, then you can too!

First off, I was quite impressed by the amount of paste you get! The jar is much bigger than I’d expected.

FullSizeRender(19)

I decided to test the product with our new Woven Lattice stencil. A normal human would probably want to use a mini squeegee or an old gift card to swipe this stuff across your stencil, but I’m a hands-on, don’t-make-me-wait sort of person. So I just used my fingers! The wax paste is a firmer paste, yet it applies over the stencil easily.

Disclaimer: As I said before – I’m not a professional at this. On my first attempt, I just went for it! I smeared a nice, big pearly glob of paste right across my stencil, and ended up with a pretty rough-looking design.

FullSizeRender(19) copy

Lesson learned. For my second try, I held my stencil in place just a bit more firmly (as my rebellious nature still wouldn’t allow me to just go get a piece of stencil tape). I also used a bit less paste than before, and the results were fantastic!

FullSizeRender(19) copy 2

One of the cool properties of this paste is that once it dries (and bonus – it’s a relatively quick-drying product!), you can use a paper towel or soft cloth to buff the surface for additional shine! Buffing seems to ever so slightly bring out the silvery pearl finish, and will also neaten any rough edges. Personally, I think it looks great either way. It just depends on the look you prefer.

closeup

I buffed just the top of the stenciled image (above) to give you an idea. I’d also advise you to buff carefully so your project doesn’t pick up the color from the paper towel you buff with.

And for our grand finale, take a look below. This is the kind of incredible card you can create using Inka-Gold Wax Paste! Just click on the image for project supply list and instructions!

Technique: Inking Metal Sheet Die-Cuts

In last week’s webisode we talked about all kinds of ways to use Spellbinders’ Metal Sheets in your scrapbooking and card making projects!

Metal Sheets are exactly that – thin sheets of metal. They basically feel like very thick foil, yet are thin enough for easy die cutting.  They come in Precious Metals or Jewel Tones.

Precious Metals (12 Pack)

Precious Metals (12 Pack)

Jewel Tones (12 Pack)

Jewel Tones (12 Pack)

Inking your gorgeous metal die-cuts adds depth and richness, or can give an aged or patina-ed look. Two products you can use to ink metal sheets are Spectrum Noir™ alcohol pens and StazOn® ink pads since both work well on slick, non-porous surfaces.

This incredible scrapbook page from Susan uses Metal Sheets for the die-cut frames and flourish, and also to back her Dazzles™.

Susan then inked her flourish, frames and Dazzles™ with brown Spectrum Noir™ pens to get multiple tones of copper. Look how gorgeous her results are!

FullSizeRender(9)

You can also use StazOn® to ink your Metal Sheets, and that’s just what LeNae has done with the metal die-cut label on her card, below.

FullSizeRender(12)

Click the image for project instructions

This is such a stunning card! I love it! She inked the edges of the metal die-cut label with Jet Black StazOn® and it really makes this element stand out. It can be helpful to use a cotton swab to apply ink on some of the more detailed areas. Also, notice how she chose not to ink the “Love” greeting, making it stand out nice and bright against her background.

FullSizeRender(13)

Metal Sheets are a fantastic way to create super luxurious accents and embellishments, and inking will help to enhance that effect. So pick up some Metal Sheets here, and give this technique a try. I think you’ll really love the results!

12 Days of Christmas with Paper Wishes® – Day 9

Print

Welcome to Day 9 of 12 Days of Christmas with Paper Wishes®!

Thanks for joining me today, as I find “hidden” treasures from our Paper Wishes Webisodes.  Just in case you missed last week’s posts, here’s a link to our Weekly Webisode & Gallery Archive – click here.

All the projects featured from the last week – all came from our Weekly Webisode over the years.   Soooo much inspiration and not just for the holidays!

In the theme of Gift Giving – Let’s see the goodies I found today!

Today’s projects come from Bangle BraceletsClick here to watch

Aired: October 19, 2011

When I first saw these bangles – I was amazed with the work that our designers put into them. They used crystal stickers, smooch inks, metallic inks, embossing inks, Dazzles™, stamps, glaze and the list goes on and on.

You can put just about anything on these bangles and personalized them as well. A great little gift – to make for someone or even yourself! Come check out a couple of my favorites but, I found it very hard to pick just two!
