Shhhh…. Here’s Your Fall Catalog Sneak Preview!!!

Well folks, your Fall 2015 Paper Wishes catalogs are in the mail, and this Saturday you’ll be able to see all the amazing new papers, stamps, cutting dies and so much more at PaperWishes.com! Now, I arguably have one of the best jobs here at Paper Wishes because I get to see all the new products and projects before they are even released. And after proofing this catalog, I already have my own personal wishlist that just keeps growing… (but that’s okay, it’s work-related)!

So, I thought you all might enjoy a little “early access” to some of the awesome craft supplies you’ll discover in your Fall 2015 Paper Wishes catalog!

The Letterpress Scrapbooking Collection from Hot Off The Press features coordinating papers, die-cuts, paper tole & ribbons in gorgeous autumn colors. In fact, we loved these Letterpress papers so much that a large-scale version now graces the walls of our conference room! Each panel is 12″x12″ and this really lets you see all the layers of artwork in these papers.

Take a closer look—each letter features its own special layers of text and swirls… just incredible!

Also look for our three other new scrapbooking collections: Wildflowers, Serenity and Winter’s Garden! Our graphic designers really outdid themselves on all of these collections, and for once, I honestly can’t pick a favorite!

Our design team has found they prefer to die cut the shapes first, and then stamp with the matching design. Also look for Half & Half: Stockings Cutting Die & Stamp Set—the Christmas stocking designs are incredibly adorable (I cannot overstate this!!) and this was one of the first new items to show up on my wishlist!

Each pack contains 4 cards, 4 envelopes, a project idea and lots of coordinating die-cuts to decorate and layer however you like! Stunning Photo Mats from Designer Susan Cobb

Hello everyone!!! I’m glad you’re here. If the Paper Wishes Blog ever gets a little bit quiet, you can be sure we are working on our next catalog filled with all kinds of amazing new craft products, card ideas and scrapbook layouts! It’s coming in less than a month (the beginning of September), but I’ll be bringing you an early look at some of my new crafting favorites that are inside!

We are well overdue for some great papercrafting inspiration, so I thought I’d bring you the best of the best, and falling squarely in this realm are Susan Cobb’s incredible matted photos! These layouts are from past Personal Shopper Scrapbooking Classes monthly kits.

If you haven’t heard of our monthly scrapbooking kits, they are incredible! Each month we send you 24 gorgeous sheets of 12″x12″ scrapbooking papers (before anyone else sees them!), tons of embellishments AND new crafting supplies (stamps, embossing folders, etc.). So here’s a layout that Susan did using some papers designed exclusively for our monthly scrapbookers:

susanpage1susanpage2

Here’s the first page, close up:

susanpage1

At first glance, you might almost think Susan inked her photo mat edges black, but no! She has matted her photos on black cardstock with 1/16″ borders to provide some great contrast against the soft-colored papers. She then double-matted her photos on coordinating papers, and finished them off with a final 1/16″ black cardstock mat. I just love how clean and defined everything looks!

susanpage2

By consistently matting her black-matted photos on yellow, and then onto her different coordinating papers, it ties all of her photos together for a unified look that I love! She used Pink Jewel Dazzles™ to add the perfect amount of sparkle, and the pink hearts paper matting her upper photos? It’s been embossed with the hearts, and then lightly sanded—what a great way to add in texture! (And yes, the embossing folder was included in the kit!)

Here’s another one of Susan’s layouts, also from our monthly Personal Shopper Scrapbooking Classes kits. You might recognize the Artful Watercolor papers that she used. Monthly scrapbooking members get our newest papers before they are even released—another benefit to joining. In fact, most of us who work here at Paper Wishes are scrapbooking club members mainly for the papers! Yes, they are that good.

susanpage3susanpage4

So here’s her first page:

susanpage3

Here Susan used the same black matting technique throughout to unify her look. On her photos, she used strips cut from Artful Watercolor striped paper to accent the bottom and side edges of her photos. This technique can also be used to fill the more “empty” spaces of a photo—try this next time instead of cropping!

She has also created her own artfully splattered paper to mat two of her images. You can try this out too! Just place a piece of watercolor paper and lightly brush one side with water. Then, use a toothbrush to pick up your colorant of choice (Susan used watercolor pencils) and run your thumb over the bristles to spatter your paper! You can do this with more than one color, and the colors will run together a bit more on the wet side of your paper. This technique goes great with the Artful Watercolor papers!

susanpage4

Adding the eyelash fibers and paper blossoms to her photos adds even more interest, and the watercolor spattering is continued on the Gold Color Me™ tag embellishment. And all these embellishments (plus lots more!) come with every Personal Shopper Scrapbooking Classes kit. I love pages like this, and I have to thank Susan for creating them. I hope you all feel a bit more inspired, and take a little time out to create. Don’t be afraid to take these techniques to your cardmaking as well! Have a wonderful day, and thanks for stopping by.

Using New Inka-Gold Wax Paste With Stencils

Created by Susan Cobb

Happy Friday everyone and thanks for stopping by! Today marks the first day of spring and I am soooo ready for it! For me, spring is generally that time of year when I like to incorporate a bit of new-ness into my own life. Maybe we’re supposed to do that in January, but nope, not me. In January I’m still hibernating.

But then spring arrives, and I start feeling ready for something new. And preferably colorful. Something like these new Inka-Gold Wax Pastes!

Now, there is a little need-to-know background info I’d like to share about myself before we go on… Yes, I make cards. Yes, I can cobble together a scrapbook page. But my day job? I write, I edit, I proofread. I love to find errors. But a professional crafter I am not. So if I can be successful with this fun, colored paste, then you can too!

First off, I was quite impressed by the amount of paste you get! The jar is much bigger than I’d expected.

FullSizeRender(19)

I decided to test the product with our new Woven Lattice stencil. A normal human would probably want to use a mini squeegee or an old gift card to swipe this stuff across your stencil, but I’m a hands-on, don’t-make-me-wait sort of person. So I just used my fingers! The wax paste is a firmer paste, yet it applies over the stencil easily.

Disclaimer: As I said before – I’m not a professional at this. On my first attempt, I just went for it! I smeared a nice, big pearly glob of paste right across my stencil, and ended up with a pretty rough-looking design.

FullSizeRender(19) copy

Lesson learned. For my second try, I held my stencil in place just a bit more firmly (as my rebellious nature still wouldn’t allow me to just go get a piece of stencil tape). I also used a bit less paste than before, and the results were fantastic!

FullSizeRender(19) copy 2

One of the cool properties of this paste is that once it dries (and bonus – it’s a relatively quick-drying product!), you can use a paper towel or soft cloth to buff the surface for additional shine! Buffing seems to ever so slightly bring out the silvery pearl finish, and will also neaten any rough edges. Personally, I think it looks great either way. It just depends on the look you prefer.

closeup

I buffed just the top of the stenciled image (above) to give you an idea. I’d also advise you to buff carefully so your project doesn’t pick up the color from the paper towel you buff with.

And for our grand finale, take a look below. This is the kind of incredible card you can create using Inka-Gold Wax Paste! Just click on the image for project supply list and instructions!

Technique: Inking Metal Sheet Die-Cuts

In last week’s webisode we talked about all kinds of ways to use Spellbinders’ Metal Sheets in your scrapbooking and card making projects!

Metal Sheets are exactly that – thin sheets of metal. They basically feel like very thick foil, yet are thin enough for easy die cutting.  They come in Precious Metals or Jewel Tones.

Precious Metals (12 Pack)

Precious Metals (12 Pack)

Jewel Tones (12 Pack)

Jewel Tones (12 Pack)

Inking your gorgeous metal die-cuts adds depth and richness, or can give an aged or patina-ed look. Two products you can use to ink metal sheets are Spectrum Noir™ alcohol pens and StazOn® ink pads since both work well on slick, non-porous surfaces.

This incredible scrapbook page from Susan uses Metal Sheets for the die-cut frames and flourish, and also to back her Dazzles™.

Susan then inked her flourish, frames and Dazzles™ with brown Spectrum Noir™ pens to get multiple tones of copper. Look how gorgeous her results are!

FullSizeRender(9)

You can also use StazOn® to ink your Metal Sheets, and that’s just what LeNae has done with the metal die-cut label on her card, below.

FullSizeRender(12)

Click the image for project instructions

This is such a stunning card! I love it! She inked the edges of the metal die-cut label with Jet Black StazOn® and it really makes this element stand out. It can be helpful to use a cotton swab to apply ink on some of the more detailed areas. Also, notice how she chose not to ink the “Love” greeting, making it stand out nice and bright against her background.

FullSizeRender(13)

Metal Sheets are a fantastic way to create super luxurious accents and embellishments, and inking will help to enhance that effect. So pick up some Metal Sheets here, and give this technique a try. I think you’ll really love the results!

Another option is this beautiful Reversible Butterfly necklace. One side is embossed other side is debossed. Very Cool! And if you watch the webisode, Ann goes over some pretty cool techniques.
