Designer Tip: Break up a busy patterned background with long strips of a subtler patterned paper.

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Background For both pages: Start with the Simply Susan zig zag paper running horizontally as your background. For left page only: Mat four 2"x11" Simply Susan aqua floral papers on black cardstock with 1/16" borders. Glue the first strip 1/2" from the right edge and the next two 1" apart. Save the last for the Rolled Banner technique. For right page only: Mat a 3 1/2"x11" Simply Susan aqua paper on black with a 1/16" border and glue 1/2" from right edge. Mat a 2"x11" Simply Susan aqua paper on black and glue 1" to the left.
  2. TECHNIQUE: ROLLED BANNERS For left page: Cut a 2 1/2" length of straw and glue to the upper edge of a 2 1/2"x12" Simply Susan aqua texture paper. Roll the paper edge down over the straw and glue in place. Repeat for the lower edge. Cut the banner in two, 2 1/2" from the lower edge. Place the two pieces 1/4" from the left edge of your page, and 1/8" from the upper and lower edges, keeping the strips aligned vertically. Glue the saved 2"x11" aqua matted strip on center. Mat a 12"x2" Simply Susan purple floral paper on Simply Susan black dot with 1/8" borders on upper and lower edges and glue 2" from the lower edge. For right page: Create another Rolled Banner using two 3" lengths of straw and a 3"x12" Simply Susan aqua texture paper. Cut the banner in two, 2 1/2" from the lower edge. Place the two pieces 7/8" from the left edge of your page, and 1/8" from the upper and lower edges, keeping the strips aligned vertically.
  3. JOURNALING For left page: Journal the title on three 5/8" wide strips of Simply Susan aqua floral paper, mat on white with 1/16" borders, then on Simply Susan purple floral with 1/4" borders, then on black dot with 1/16" borders. Foam tape each word over a 6 1/2" length of black dot ribbon with a loop at the top, centered on the left aqua strip. Trim the lower end of the ribbon in a "v". Zot on a bow of ribbon as shown. For right page: Journal the heading and description on a 2 1/2"x11" aqua floral paper, 1" from the upper edge. Mat on black with a 1/16" border and glue on center of the rolled banner. Mat a 12"x2" Simply Susan purple floral paper on black dot with 1/8" borders on upper and lower edges and glue 2" from the lower edge. Font: Rechtman Plain - 36 pt. for title, 32 pt. for heading; Apple Chancery - 14 pt. for description.
  4. Photos For left page: Mat three 2 1/2"x3 1/2" photos on white with 1/16" borders and foam tape over the aqua strips, as shown. For right page: Mat a 4"x6" photo on black with a 1/16" border, and foam tape over the right aqua strip, 2 1/2" from the lower edge of your page. Mat a 2 1/2"x3 1/2" photo on white with a 1/16" border and foam tape over the center aqua strip, as shown. Mat a 3 1/2"x2 1/2" photo on white with a 1/16" border and foam tape over the left aqua strip, as shown.
  5. TECHNIQUE: RIBBON CLIPS Thread a 1 1/2" length of lilac butterfly ribbon through one side of a swirl clip and Zot end to ribbon back. Repeat on other side with a 2 1/2" length of ribbon. Repeat for two more ribbon clips. For left page: Zot ribbon clip onto center photo as shown, tucking ribbon ends under matting. For right page: Zot a ribbon clip onto center photo, and above journaling as shown, tucking ribbon ends under matting.
  6. TECHNIQUE: RIBBON & CAP PAPIER TOLE For left page: Pop out corresponding die-cuts for the large butterfly swirl papier tole and sand the edges, setting flower #2 aside for other embellishments. Foam tape die-cut #1 in place, tucking under the lower corner of the left photo. Foam tape a bottle cap over the large flower and foam tape center #3 over the bottle cap. Foam tape butterflies #4 & 5 in place. Zot on a bow of lilac ribbon over the butterfly and Zot butterfly #6 on top of the bow. Foam tape the flower centers in place. For right page: Repeat as for left page, using the "Soar" corresponding die-cuts, and Zotting a bow of lilac ribbon under the last butterfly layer. Foam tape at the base of the large photo. Repeat for the flower corresponding die-cuts, replacing flower #2 with a bottle cap and foam taping center #3 over the bottle cap. Foam tape at the base of the left photo.

For right page: Foam tape butterflies on the bottle cap flower and near the journaled heading. Foam tape the saved flower layers under the upper corner of the large photo.
