Layouts With Pizazz

The Collins Family

By Shauna Berglund-Immel

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Use the brown with blue floral border paper as the background, orienting the paper so the border runs up the right edge. Enlarge a photo to 6”x9”, then use sandpaper to distress the edges and corners of the photo in a crisscross pattern. Ink the edges of the sanded photo with Antique Linen Distress Ink and stamp in the bottom left corner of the photo using the StazOn Ink Pad; let dry.
  2. Mat the photo on blue textured paper, trimming the mat to 1/4”, and ink the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink. Mat again on aqua floral paper, trimming the mat to 5/8”, and ink the edges with the same ink. Glue the matted photo centered on the brown portion of the background paper, leaving the right edge unglued.
  3. Using a sewing needle and ivory thread, sew a zigzag pattern overlapping the seam between the left and right edges of the blue textured photo mat and the aqua floral mat. Tip: You may find it easier to pre-poke your holes before you start sewing.
  4. Cut out the medium blue tag with the large blue flower printed on it and add an antique copper brad to the tab. Run a short length of ivory thread through the hole in the Garden Gate Treasures key, then tie the tails together and loop the thread around the brad. Use foam tape to attach the tag at an angle in the top left corner of the photo. Cut an 8” length of brown/ivory striped ribbon and tie it into a shoestring bow. Trim the tails at an angle and use a Glue Dot™ to secure the bow just above the tag. Add one antique copper mini safety pin to the center of the bow.
  5. Cut a 2”x7/8” strip of aqua floral paper and ink the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink. Secure one end of the strip behind the bottom right edge of the aqua floral photo mat, then secure the edge of the photo mat to the page with a glue stick. Fold the paper strip over onto the front of the photo and secure in place with foam tape. Cut a 3” length of brown/ivory striped ribbon and trim the tails at an angle, tie a knot in the center and add one antique copper mini safety pin to the knot. Use a Glue Dot™ to secure the knot over the right end of the paper strip. Cut out the small dark blue tag, add an antique copper brad to the tab and use a black pen to journal the year onto the tag. Cut a short length of ivory thread and wrap it around the brad, then tie the tails together to form a loop. Use a Glue Dot™ to attach the thread to the left end of the paper strip with a button placed on top of it, then secure the tag in place with foam tape.
  6. Use a black pen to journal the names and location onto the brown portion of the background paper, along the edges of the photo mat.

A tip from Shauna: An easy way to get across a vintage feel with your scrapbooking is to distress your papers, embellishments or photos. On this vintage layout, I sanded and inked the edges of a modern photo to give it a well-worn look, helping it fit in with the style of the layout. You might also try crumpling or inking your patterned papers and even sanding, inking or painting metal embellishments like brads and library card holders.
