For the Binder Surface:
- Use the direct-to-paper inking technique to apply black ink to the
inside and outside surfaces of both the front and back covers of the
binder plus the spine. Cut a 6 1/2”x5 3/4” piece of red
quilt paper, then ink the edges with black and glue centered on the
front surface of the binder.
- Cut out and crop the quote to a 4 1/2”x3 3/4” rectangle
and ink the edges with black. Use red and green decorating chalks to
accent the holly and some of the words on the quote. Mat on red scuff
paper, then trim the mat to 1/16” and ink the edges with black.
Mat again on black cardstock, trimming the left, top and bottom edges
of the mat to 1/16” and the right edge to 3/4”. Glue the
matted quote centered on the front of the binder.
- Cut a 13” length of black and white gingham ribbon and wrap
it vertically around the front cover of the binder, centering the length
over the large side of the black quote mat. Cut an 8” length of
black and white gingham ribbon and trim the tails at an angle. Tie the
length into a shoestring bow and use a Glue Dot™ to attach the
bow toward the top of the ribbon length on the front of the binder.
- For the inside of the binder, cut a 6 1/2”x5 3/4” piece
each of red diamonds and red poinsettia papers. Ink the edges of the
papers with black, then glue the diamonds paper inside the front cover
of the binder and glue the poinsettia paper inside the back cover of
- Use alphabet stamps to stamp “Christmas Photos” onto white
cardstock, then crop to a rectangle and ink the edges with black. Mat
on red scuff paper, trimming the mat to 1/16”, and ink the edges
with black. Mat again on black cardstock, trimming the mat to 1/8”.
Cut a 3 1/2” length of black and white gingham ribbon and tie
it around the top of an antique heart clip. Add the clip to the top
left side of the “Christmas Photos” title and glue the title
centered inside the front cover of the binder.
For the Binder Inserts:
a 1/2” wide strip of white cardstock and ink the edges with black.
Use number stamps and black ink to stamp the year toward the right end
of the strip. Mat the strip on red poinsettia paper, trimming the mat
to 1/4”, and ink the edges with black. Glue centered across the
flap of an envelope, trimming the excess paper even with the edges of
the flap, then ink all the edges of the envelope with black. Cut a triangle
of red poinsettia paper, then ink the edges with black and glue flush
against the bottom right corner of the envelope.
- Repeat step 1 to create a separate envelope for each year, alternating
between red poinsettia paper, red diamonds paper and red scuff paper
when accenting the envelopes.
A tip from Sara: A photo CD holder is great for yourself,
or make it as a last-minute gift–they take no time at all! To coordinate
the inserts with the outside of the binder, try accenting the corners
or creating mats and paper strips out of the same papers that you used
to cover the surface. To further accent the inserts, try inking the edges
or rubber stamping onto them. You can also add stickers, ribbon, brads,
clips, word fragments and more for a totally personalized look!
