  1. Use the Denim paper as the background. Cut a 5 3/4"-wide strip off the right side of the American Flag paper and glue it 3/4" from the right side of the Denim background. Cut a 5 3/4"x12" piece of tan vellum and place it over the flag strip, then add a red mini brad to each corner to secure the vellum in place.
  2. Mat a vertical photo on navy cardstock and trim the mat to 1/16". Mat again on white cardstock, trim to 1/8" and ink the edges black. Mat a third time on red cardstock and trim to 1/16". Add “USA” rub-ons down the top left edge of the photo. Punch three holes down the top right edge of the photo. Run striped and gingham ribbon through each hole, knotting it around the edge of the mats. Glue the photo over the flag strip, just above center and extending slightly off the left edge.
  3. Cut out number ephemera to represent the year. Ink the edge of each number black and glue them below the bottom right edge of the photo. Glue the barber's pole to the right of the photo.
  4. Ink the white side of a slide mount with tan ink and knot striped ribbon around one edge. Glue white cardstock behind the slide mount, leaving a 1/16" mat around the edges of the slide mount. Journal in the slide mount window and glue the slide mount over the left side of the page.
  5. Cut and tear out ephemera, inking the edges of some pieces black. Glue the ephemera at varying angles and overlapping each other down the left side of the page.

Vintage Ephemera

LeNae created a vintage effect on this traditional patriotic layout using Vintage Ephemera.

LeNae Gerig

A tip from LeNae: Have a background paper in mind, but think the pattern or colors might be too distracting? Tone it down with a layer of vellum! I used an American flag paper in a portion of this patriotic background, though the bright red and stark white of the American flag seemed a little too bold when placed next to the muted colors found in the ephemera. My solution? A layer of tan vellum over the American flag paper easily tones down the bold red and white, offering balance to the layout.
