First Day of Pre-K

By LeNae Gerig

  1. Use the bricks with words paper as the background. Cut a 6 1/2"x5 3/4" piece of brown/green stripe paper (stripes running horizontally) and ink the edges brown. Glue the stripe paper flush against the right edge of the background, centered between the top and bottom of the page.
  2. Mat a vertical photo on moss green cardstock, trim the mat to 1/8" and ink the edges brown. Use a black pen to journal onto the brown index tab, then fold the tab and glue around the bottom right edge of the photo. Glue the photo 3/4" from the top of the page and 5/8" from the right side of the page, leaving the left side of the photo unglued.
  3. Computer journal onto ivory cardstock, leaving extra space in the title to accent with an alphabet or number tile. Crop to a vertical rectangle with about 1" of extra space along the bottom edge. Tear along the bottom edge of the journaling, then ink all the edges. Tuck the right edge of the journaling slightly under the unglued left edge of the photo, then glue the journaling and the rest of the photo in place. Use foam tape to add an alphabet or number tile to the journaling. Knot a 3" length of brown grosgrain ribbon and use a Glue Dot™ to attach the knot at the top of the journaling.
  4. Fold a 3" length of green sheer ribbon in half and use a Glue Dot™ to secure the folded end extending from the bottom left corner of the photo. Attach a small brown silk flower over the folded end of the ribbon with another Glue Dot™. Run a thin strip of ivory cardstock through the holes on a large green button, then use a Glue Dot™ to secure the button in the center of the flower. Use a black pen to journal the year onto the blank orange ribbon fragment and glue in the top right corner of the page.

A tip from LeNae: Sometimes the smallest little embellishment can make all the difference. Have you experimented with alphabet tiles? Alphabet tiles are a super quick and easy way to add letters (or numbers) to your projects. They're great for creating customized page titles or card sentiments, adding a monogram to your project, or for accenting journaling. On this school layout, I used one simple alphabet tile to accent my journaling: The "K" alphabet tile in the word "Pre-K" adds a bit of color and playfulness to the journaling. I was even able to add extra movement and dimension to the journaling block by attaching the alphabet tile at an angle with foam tape.
