Girlfriends Getaway!

What is Girlfriends Getaway? That was the first questioned I asked! I wasn’t able to attend last year, since I had just given birth to my son Emerson <3

Well, if you aren’t familiar with GG, let me tell you about this wonderful event! Each year, for one day Paulette Jarvey (owner) of Hot Off The Press & Paper Wishes® holds an event of creativity. This year she featured so many fun projects – from creating cards or a page, creating an album, some different techniques with tags and creating a mini book!

Sandy showing her Butterfly Card

98 attendees joined us this year! The day started off with great energy as everyone arrived with moms, sisters, best friends, friends and I’m sure along the way, new friends were made! I know made some new ones – as Kris, Hailie and I helped out with passing out glue sticks, free prizes, M&M’s, glitter and so much more! I loved the interaction I had with many of the ladies – I got to see their projects, I met sisters, moms, cousins, best friends and I was even bribed with picking their names out of the prize basket. But they did eventually win! (NO bribe was needed)…LOL

We had a couple of ladies who traveled from out of the area, Sue Beaupre, from Winsor Ontario, Canada and from Ariana Fish from Wheeling, Illinois.  I was delighted that I had a chance to chat with Sue – as she expressed her gratitude for the webisodes, newsletters and all that we do. Theses were the smiles that made the day 🙂 getting to know our customers and seeing their love for the craft

Did I mention the prizes? During the year, Stan our Paper Wishes® buyer receives all kinds of goodies that companies send us for samples. We then turn around and give them as prizes! Debbie should be everyone’s best friend as she put them all together.  During the event, each hour 10-11 prizes were given out and if you didn’t win – your name was entered into the Grand Prize! We gave a total of 65 prizes. However, nobody walked away empty handed – because through out the day Paulette would announce – little things like, Do you love the Design tools??? Well you get to keep them!! 🙂 Along with a metal stencil there were many little surprises like this the entire day that Paulette gave the attendees. Paulette loves her customers and loves to spoil them and it REALLY showed today!! We even got to sing Happy Birthday to attendee Krystal Snyder!!

Paulette one-on-one

Very pretty ladies!

Paulette spends just about the whole year planning the event and coming up with projects that everyone would love to discover. The whole company gets involved in planning, setting and breakdown – starting with Susan Cobb (our designer) who designed the projects that were shown, Debbie Samples sent out invites, got everyone registered, helped finding hotels, put together the sample sale, ordered lunch, put together all the fabulous prizes, plus so much more.

Here’s the list of all employees that helped set up, helped during the event, helped breaking down the event, or helped wherever was needed: Mike (Paulette’s Husband), Sandy (VP of Operation), Adam (Paulette’s son), Stan (Buyer), Linda (Warehouse manager), Kayla (Inventory), Kris (Warehouse Assistant), Hailie (Warehouse Assistant), Athena (Management Assist/Proofer), Kyla (Art Director), Steve O. (Web manager), Steve P. (Technology manager), Malia L. (Key accounts), Sharon (Kit Coordinator), Vera (Supreme packager), Mike Murphy (Warehouse Assistant), Jeweli (Warehouse Assistant), Corey Toews (Accounting) also Sarah (Sharon’s Daughter), Tom Juhala and Bruce.  A huge THANK-YOU goes out to all of them 🙂 We ROCK!

With all our sore legs and tired fingers – it was worth the efforts & the smiles!! Thank you to all who attended – You made the day! See you all next year 🙂 and if you’d like to attend next year – please contact Debbie Samples, at dsamples@hotp.com. And the sooner the better!

And just remember – to “Craft” like nobody is watching!

Meet Gail Booth – Our Newest Hot Off The Press Designer

As Gail settles in here at Hot Off The Press…I wanted to get a chance to find out a little more about her. You might have seen Gail in our webisodes, as she is taking over for Ann Barba.

Q: How did you discover the “therapy” of crafting?

A: I come from a family of eight children, and I get my artistic and crafting abilities from both of my parents. With such a large family we had a limited budget, so I learned to entertain myself by making things out of whatever was handy. I’ve done scrapbooking with paper grocery bags (and I was quite pleased with the results), and I’ve made magic wands out of old flashlights that would make Harry Potter envious.

Q: What do you love creating the most?

A: In paper crafting my favorite projects are usually cards, and when I can I like to put a lot of time into the small details. I also love origami and kirigami techniques, plus I share that love with my oldest son, Lance. I developed a love for quilting from my Mom and my Grandmother, and I do hand quilting on cold winter evenings, in front of the television. I love to draw too, and I am pleased to say that my youngest son, Connor shares that passion.

Q: How do you gather your inspirations for your projects?

A: I find that my greatest artistic motivations come from nature, so I naturally love spending time camping (in a tent) with my two boys whenever I can.

Q: Tell us about the first day at HOTP?

A: My first day here left me a little dazed with loads of new information (“these are Dazzles, not stickers”), but my new friends here have made me feel like part of the family. My work here at Hot Off The Press has given me the greatest opportunity to use my artistic side. Being on the design team is a great privilege because I’m working with such a creative team. I learn something new from the other designers every day. I’m sure that my webisode presentations will get better over time, but for such a small person, Ann really left some big shoes to fill.

Q: What are some of the things that are excited about being part of HOTP?

A: I love getting a “sneak peek” at upcoming paper packs (wait until you see them!) and figuring new ways to use them. I also love experimenting with the new tools, just like my Dad taught me (thanks Dad).

Q: What are some of your “new” favorites?

A: Embossing powders are my favorite must have when working on cards. They add such a classy look. I’m really starting to get hooked on Thin Line Dazzles too, because it’s so quick to add highlights with them.

Q: What is one of your favorite little tips?
A: I like to cut out artwork from a patterned paper and layer right back on top of the same artwork with foam tape. It adds dimension easily and highlights those beautifully decorated papers

Q: When you aren’t crafing what are some things you like to do:

A: When I’m not restoring my historic home, I’m spending time with my two wonderfully talented boys. We love playing board games best, reading like maniacs, hiking and geo-caching too – it’s fun, look it up! My latest big thrill is singing karaoke, and I do that whenever I can get friends together. I had the good fortune to win an opportunity to sing on stage with a fantastic band at the Hollywood Theater in Portland a couple of years ago. It was the thrill of a lifetime for me, and I have pictures to prove it!

Thanks for the opportunity to share, I guess it’s time for me to go “play” at work!

Thank you Gail for sharing! These are just a few of Gail’s beautiful projects. Please make sure you catch Paulette & Gail – each Wednesday, on our Weekly Webisodes!

So many tips & tricks on Paperwishes.com 101 sites!

Have you had a chance to check out Paper Wishes 101 sites? Well if you haven’t had a chance…you are definitely missing out on LOTS of FREE techniques, tips and best of all inspiration!

Three different 101 sites to choose from – something for everyone:

Each month the designers come up with a different technique, trick or tip. They are usually simple and easy to follow along. This month in each section we are featured HOTP’s beautiful paper pack – Fresh Cut Blossoms.

Scrapbooking 101 –

Love & Happiness by LeNae Gerig < Click here to get complete instructions

Tip: Create banners for your page using strips of patterned paper and cutting an inverted “v” into one end, creating the “ribbon” look on your page.

 CardMaking 101

Get Well Soon By LeNae Gerig  < Click here to get complete instructions

Tip: Repurpose the used Fresh Cut Foil Tags & Labels backing sheet to create more labels from patterned paper.

 Stamping 101

Think of You By Ann Barba < Click here to get complete instructions

Tip: To make the greetings appear in your flower shapes, first stamp the greeting on scrap paper creating a mask. Trim around the greeting and place on cardstock. Then, stamp the large flower image over the mask. Remove the mask and stamp the greeting in the blank space. The Perfect Printing Pouch helps your embossed images stay crisp, and prevents stray embossing powder from sticking to other parts of your card.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve found soo much information on each of these sites. From videos, simple tricks, Q&A, notes on the designers…the list just goes on and on. These sites are a great resource that everyone should dive into and bookmark them, as we update them each month.
