Spring 2016: Card Kits, Planners, Watercolors & Spring Cleaning!

Here at Paper Wishes, spring has officially sprung! Just as we’re seeing signs of new life outside, we have lots of fresh new items that debuted in the Early Spring 2016 Paper Wishes® Special Edition catalog (all available now at! This catalog has a lot to get excited about, so here’s a peek at a few of my favorites (love my job)! 🙂

Rose Garden Foiled Die-Cut Topper Kit

First I want to share something that’s both new and spectacularly gorgeous—the Rose Garden Foiled Topper Kit! Gail demo-ed this kit during her appearance on HSN and it completely sold out. If you didn’t get yours, here’s your chance! Supplies are limited.

A luxurious, foiled card topper kit in vivid fuchsia, lime and teal florals.

  • 160 stunning, gold-foiled die-cuts
  • 16  patterned papers (8.5″x11″)
  • 24 blank white cards (5″x6.5″) and 24 envelopes
  • idea sheet

Here are a couple of project ideas, although clearly you’ll have TONS of beautiful options to play with!

Some of the toppers are so large that they make a perfect shaped card! Designed by Debbie Samples.

You can layer the toppers, and yes—that beautiful, lacy paper is part of the set! Designed by Gail Booth.

Carpe Diem Planner Collection

Another favorite (especially among Paper Wishes employees) is the Carpe Diem Planner Collection from Simple Stories! Apparently, we all needed to get organized—but doing so also had to be fun and creative. The planner already comes with everything you need. Then, just choose coordinating Carpe Diem planner extras to customize it—take a look!

Carpe Diem Planner in Platinum

Carpe Diem Planner in Coral

Carpe Diem Planner in Black

Planner comes with foiled acetate insert; 12 monthly calendar pages; 12 monthly tabbed dividers; 72 weekly inserts; 7 decorative inserts; one A5 notepad tablet

Here are all the fun extras—with even more coming in April 2016!

Carpe Diem Magnetic Bookmarks

Carpe Diem Bits ‘N Pieces Die-Cuts

Carpe Diem Sticky Note Bookmark

Carpe Diem Pocket Inserts

Carpe Diem Calendar Stickers

And one of our graphic designers, Kristen, had a fabulous idea—use the weekly pages as a journal! You can still plan ahead on the monthly calendar AND have a place to jot down those precious daily moments that we forget all too easily! Genius!

Stackable Caddy Organizer (Deflecto)

Embracing some much-needed organization, I also picked up one of these!

caddyMoms and grandmas, do you see this!? This caddy features three compartments with snapping lids to keep little fingers out! You can even turn the containers so the lid latches on the inside (close to the handle) keeping your “helpers” away from anything sharp, sticky or permanent. The lids are removable if this isn’t a concern for you, but you probably have a good sense of where I’m coming from… 😉 Another cool feature? You can stack multiple caddies and lock them together. This is a storage solution that I LOVE and it’s perfect to hold all your “basics.”

NEW Watercolor Basics

Another fun trend we are seeing lots of is watercolor. Personally, I love to paint. A simple watercolor background is an easy way to give your cards, pages and projects an extra layer of mixed-media-loveliness, so I’m very excited that now carries everything you’ll need to get started!

Tri-fold Watercolor Tin

No. 1 Watercolor Brush

9″x12″ Watercolor Pad

Watercolor Coloring Book

Here’s one of the pages from this incredible watercolor coloring book. I haven’t tried this book out yet, but it’s definitely on my wish list (along with this one).

So there you have just a few of my Spring Special Edition favorites! Post any comments or questions you might have below, and I’d love to hear—what were some of your favorites?

See you soon!

NEW Feathered Friends & Zen Dragonflies Colorist Books!

Today I wanted to show you the two latest Colorist books from Hot Off The Press! These cute little coloring books feature gorgeous designs, each printed on its own cardstock page and sized perfectly for a card. Yes, we know coloring is therapeutic, but let’s put our coloring to work for us and use it to create a special focal, whether for a card, page or even a gift bag!

Last week Paulette and Gail were at the CHA MEGA Show in Southern California, and alas—it was discovered we needed samples for the new books. So Gail and our awesome buyer, Kayla, found themselves in the hotel room coloring. You’ll get to see Kayla’s card on an upcoming webisode!

Our two new books are Zen Dragonflies for Colorists and Feathered Friends for Colorists, and the images are some of my favorites so far!

Here’s a sample from Zen Dragonflies that LeNae colored with Spectrum Noir™ pens, and accented with Stickles™ glitter glue! This piece would look amazing on a card. Just stamp a greeting onto one of the labels or tags that come with the book, add a bow if you like, and you’re done!

Here’s another design from Zen Dragonflies. Debbie colored her page with Spectrum Noir™ Blendable Pencils, matted it on Purple Circles Holographic paper and glued it to a gift bag—so clever! I zoomed in so you’ll be able to see the design, as well as the little gift tag hanging from the handle. Each Colorist book includes 2 sheets of matching labels and tags to use however you like (our graphic designers think of everything)!

Feathered Friends is our other must-have Colorist book! Gail did an incredible job coloring this sample, and she used something that most of us already have—ink pads! She used Art Daubers to color the frame (you “wear” the daubers on your fingers—cool!) Then she tapped the inks onto a craft sheet or acrylic block, and actually used a paintbrush to “paint” her owl. Great ideas, Gail!

And now for the coup-de-grace, Gail’s stunning Owl Center Step Card! The simplicity of the card highlights the awesome job she did coloring her owl. She used Spectrum Noir™ pens to color her owl, and if you haven’t tried these markers yet, put them on your wish list!! There are TONS of colors available, and they are grouped into color families for seamless blending. Love them!

I hope these projects will inspire you to take your coloring out of the book, and onto a card! Make your coloring count! 😀

Have a wonderfully creative day!

Oh. my. gosh. I just logged into the Paper Wishes Blog for the first time in over two weeks and it feels GREAT!

As many of you might be (painfully) aware, we’ve been experiencing some web troubles resulting from a system upgrade. This has caused big problems for people with logging in and ordering, and we are deeply sorry for the inconvenience. It’s been a frustrating couple of weeks, but our web team has been hard at work and things are close to being back to normal—phew!

Our system issues also had me locked out of the blog, which has been driving me a bit crazy. But finally yesterday, our web guys repaired the blog and I’m back in business—woohoo! And it’s just in the nick of time because I have a winner to announce!

Today we’re announcing our first week’s winner in our What’s Your Paper Wish? Facebook video giveaway! Watch the video below:

Ruth Mickelson, you’re our winner!

Your Paper Wish for a $50 Paper Wishes® gift certificate will be granted!

Visit our Facebook page for Ruth’s video and details on how to enter!

There are still two weeks of our giveaway left, so visit us on Facebook and upload your video! It’s easy and you could have your Paper Wish granted! Don’t forget, all who enter will win a prize! Be sure to stay tuned… Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be bringing you an inside look at Hot Off The Press’ newest papercraft collections (coming January 2nd!) and some great new project ideas! I hope you’re enjoying your holiday season, and thank you all again for the patience you’ve shown over the last two weeks!

It’s great to be back!

Christmas Colorists™: Winter’s Garden Christmas Card

Happy Friday! Hooray, the weekend is practically here, and I’ve gotta say that this week has flown by. I’ve been learning my way around the Paper Wishes Facebook page which I’ve recently taken on, and I can’t believe we have so many followers (over 16,000)—it’s kind of amazing. I’m excited to be able to interact with so many Paper Wishers, so stop by and give us a “Like!”

It’s been a whirlwind of a week, and so the past two nights (after the kids are in bed) I’ve been coloring in our new Christmas Ornaments for Colorists coloring book. It’s been so relaxing! It’s this great combination of being creative while mentally “checking out” to a certain degree! And of course, after I finished, it just had to go on a card! One Christmas card down, so many to go! 🙂

Colorist Christmas Card

I colored the image with Spectrum Noir™ markers, and added Gold Smooch™ ink and Silver Stickles™ glitter glue accents. The background papers are from Hot Off The Press’ Winter’s Garden paper pack, which is fun, bright and cheery! It also plays nicely into my predilection for lime green :-D. Colorist books give you two of each design, so I was able to cut out the holly berries and foam tape a second layer on top of the first. Not perfect, but it was fun!

Definitely try one of these coloring books if you haven’t already! Let yourself unwind by coloring, and who knows? Maybe a card will be born! Have a wonderful weekend, and I hope you make a little time to create something you love!

Super Spooky Halloween Card With Dazzles™ & Vellum + Trick or Treat Page!

It’s Friday! And I have to say, I’m SO ready for Halloween! For me, Halloween is like the big kickoff to the whole holiday season! So to get in the spirit, here are a couple hauntingly creative project ideas—a card and a page. I couldn’t bring myself to choose between them, so you get both! These projects use Halloween papers from Hot Off The Press, which feature a really fun mix of spooky themes and patterns.

The card you see was designed by Susan, and I just think it’s awesome. Backing her Spooky Dazzles™ cobwebs with vellum is so clever! The other cool thing Susan did was chalk her background text and flourishes papers with orange to get the exact look she desired.

BOO! Card by Susan Cobb

Designer’s Tip: Back the Spooky Dazzles™ spider webs with white vellum, and then burnish the back of the vellum inside the Dazzles™ with the stylus against the foam pad for a 3-dimensional look. Add pieces of 3-D Zots™ to the back of each piece to hold the shape.

  • 3D Zots™ adhesive dots (link)
  • Black ink pad (link)
  • Glue stick (link)
  • Craft pen knife (link)
  • Foam pad or mouse pad

The other project I chose is this scrapbook page from LeNae, and really, it’s pretty amazing how she created such great visual impact from relatively simple supplies, like black ink, Halloween papers and Spooky Dazzles™ stickers!

Neighborhood Trick or Treat Page by LeNae Gerig

Designer’s Tip: Embellish photo surfaces with Spooky Dazzles™, placing them along the tops and corners. Add spiders climbing around!

  • Fine tip black pen (link) or computer printer

The long, vertical rectangles are a fun backdrop to your favorite Halloween pictures—in fact, I’d like to create my own version of this page sometime (if my girls would all hold still for the camera)! Are you doing any fun Halloween or harvest season papercraft projects? Share a picture or tell me about it in the comments below!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Pop-Up Box Card with Gold Shadow-Stamped Acetate!

Happy Wednesday! Here’s a gorgeous card that you might not have seen! Gail designed it for our Stamping 101 page—if you haven’t visited before, you should take a look. Stamping 101 features stamping basics, plus more advanced techniques, helpful hints, information on ink pads and of course, more projects!

Designed by Gail Booth

Designed by Gail Booth

Designer Tip: Stamping on acetate with Metallic StazOn® can be slippery, so use light pressure. I used a color printer to journal “Mom” on the back panel, but black would work fine, or you could write “Mom” with a burgundy colored marker.

1. Card base: Cut six 2½”x2½” and one 2½”x5½” Roses & Lace green lace papers. Use Gold StazOn® to stamp the lace border centered at the bottom of three square pieces and the one long piece, then mat all of the pieces on the large pink rose paper with 1/8” borders. Follow the die-cut pop-up box instructions to assemble the box with Ultra Tape, but don’t install the inner supports yet. Close the box and lay flat on your work surface. Glue the stamped matted pieces onto the bottom panels with the long piece on the back panel (the one without an upper scored flap), then the remaining pieces onto the upper flaps (these will flop downward when the box is opened).

2. Card front: Open the box with the flaps down and the long panel at the back. Cut four 2 5/8”x2 5/8” pink lace papers. Journal “Mom” in burgundy on the center right side of one piece. Stamp the lace border in gold centered at the bottom of three pieces and at the top of the “Mom” piece, placing the scalloped edge on the edge of the paper. Cut 1/16” around the scalloped edge of the stamped lace, then mat all of the pieces on burgundy lace paper with 1/16” borders. Punch holes along the straight edge of the stamped lace, 1/8” from each side, and two holes centered at each scalloped valley, as shown. Lace with 1/8” ivory grosgrain, tying a bow at the center of two pieces. Glue the stamped matted pieces onto the three folded down panels and the “Mom” piece on the back panel, with the lace on the outer edge of each panel, and the bows on the center panels, as shown.

3. Supports: Stamp the lace border in gold centered at the top of two 2¾”x1½” green lace papers. Cut 1/16” around the scalloped edge of the stamped lace, then glue the strips even with the bottom of the two inner supports. Ultra Tape the two supports in place, as shown on the pop-up box instructions, close to the top open edge of the box (the lace edges extend above the opening.

4. TECHNIQUE: Shadow Stamping on Acetate: Stamp “Thinking of You” and “Wishing You a Beautiful Day” in gold on the heat resistant acetate, then stamp the same images over the first ones again with Scarlet SurfaceZ ink, offsetting the image up and to the right a bit for a shadow effect. Let dry, then cut out the sentiments and Zot™ onto the front and back panels, as shown. Use the same technique to stamp several small flowers, butterflies, hearts and scrolls. Cut out around the edge of each stamped image.

5. Zot™ ¼” wide strips from the acetate that comes with the pop-up box onto the backs of the pieces and Zot™ the other end of the strips onto the backs of the supports, arranging the pieces as shown. Zot™ on a scroll on the back panel and two tiny butterflies on the front and back panels.

This card is just stunning, and our Pop-Up Box Die-Cut Cards will deliver flawless results! I hope you’re feeling inspired and ready to do a little creating of your own! Thanks for stopping by. 🙂
