Default All occasion hunkydory

Since I liked the Hunkydory Christmas so well, I decided to get a couple of all occasion kits to speed up my card making. I DO like doing my own thing, but it sure is nice to have a kit when I need something in a hurry!

I got 2 kits - Flight of the Butterflies Jeweled Edition, and Floral Shimmer. While I DO want to complete each of them, I've been working a bit from each depending on the recipient and the kind of card I wanted to make for them.

I started with some cards from "Flight of the Butterflies". I usually don't care as much for the more "canned" cards in their kits. I prefer to do my own thing. However, these cards were GORGEOUS - though I can take little credit for their design!
  1. The first card is a very fancy gate fold card. Both sides of the gate fold have a "flip flop" element.
  2. Opening the gate fold card.
  3. Opened gate fold card.
  4. Next up is a GORGEOUS card (despite the poor picture!). It was a very ingenious card made with a vellum strip. I LOVE the way they created this one (I'm not sure, but it seems like PW might have shown this in a webisode). Anyway, you have the card back with just a 1/2" or so folded over for the flap on the left side & just the "clasp" folded over on the right side. Then there is another piece of card stock that has a clasp on the left with a bit wider strip. You glue the vellum strip to the little flap (on the left of the card) and attache the other end to the separate wider strip. Cover the joins with border strips, and add some ribbon to tie the clasp closed and everything is finished (except for embellishing of course). If the vellum is pressed tightly to the card, you can see through the vellum to the message beneath, but because of the way it's put together the vellum is raised just enough so you don't actually see through it! I DID choose to use a metallic gold ribbon from my stash instead of the ribbon that came with the kit.
  5. Finally, here's a second of those gate fold cards in a different color.

Default Floral Shimmer

In this kit, I also broke with tradition & started making one of their "special" cards. It came in four versions (like they usually do) and I made them all. It's sort of a "flip flop" card with pyramid paper tole style focal.

Since I liked the 2016 Essential Book of Christmas Sentiments so well, I decided to get The Essential Book of Pearl Sentiments, figuring it would be great to have more options for sentiments. I must admit to being a bit disappointed with this one. There were a lot of sentiments I would never use - to specific people I don't have in my life (some through death, some never were, some aren't likely to be) - grandparents, sister, son, daughter-in-law, father-in-law, grandson, granddaughter . . . you get the idea. I was expecting a lot more "Thinking of You", "Thank You", etc. There are some of those, but I'd sure have liked less of the one and more of the other! Anyway, here are pics of the first four card I made from this set:
  1. Get well card - uses a sentiment from The Essential Book of Pearl Sentiments. I thought it looked nice to have a sentiment in the lower corner - though I had to be careful to make sure no glue got on the part that was sticking out past the frame!
  2. This card just says "With Love and Best Wishes" - I figure I could use it for a variety of occasions.
  3. Here's what the card looks like when it's opened up. The larger butterfly in the upper right is a die cut. The smaller one was already there.
  4. This one says "On Your Special Day" so I figure birthday, anniversary, graduation . . . several things it could fit.
  5. The final one is a birthday card.
One thing about the "special" cards in the kits - I'm much less likely to get more than the number of cards that they expect. There's less flexibility in how they're made. But - they're REALLY pretty!

thanks for the critique on the sentiments, Cheryl - always good to hear unbiased reviews. Love the imagery/artwork in the floral shimmer - I've got the little book and just enjoy flipping through it. Great collection you've put together.

I waffle on their premium cards for the same reasons - 'some' are very nice, but more difficult to stretch those HD dollars. I lean toward kits with less 'specials' included.

Inevitably, I choose HD for my personal cards - this goes out for my babies 25th birthday next month! Made over this mornings coffee - A little Sparkle collection.

Cheryl, thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience with the HD products. And your cards turned out to be beautiful. I hope you are pleased with how much you accomplished in the time you had to spend on it.
My frustration comes when I spin my wheels and am not able to finish anything, or I just need to spend that time putting away stuff.
