Peppermint Swirl Soaps — By: Katie Hacker

  • 5 oz. opaque cucumber glycerin soap
  • peppermint soap fragrance (or peppermint extract)
  • red bordeaux soap colorizing powder
  • 2 1/2" round mold
  • rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle

Designer Tips: These adorable peppermint candy soaps make a great gift for the holidays, or try a different scent and color combination for year-round soap making!

  1. Melt 2 1/2 ounces of soap in the microwave or on the stove top: For the microwave, place the soap in a microwave safe container and microwave for 40 seconds on high, then in 10 second intervals until all the soap is melted. For the stove top, place the soap in a double boiler and set over low heat until completely melted, stirring slowly to encourage melting.
  2. Add 2 drops of peppermint soap fragrance (or 1 drop of peppermint extract) and two pinches or red colorizing powder to the melted soap, stirring until the color is uniform.
  3. Pour the soap into the mold and let cool. Once cool, remove the soap from the mold and cut into eighths. Arrange four of the pieces in the mold in a pinwheel pattern and spritz with alcohol.
  4. Melt the remaining 2 1/2 ounces of soap. Let the soap cool 1-2 minutes, until a "skin" forms on the top, then pour into the mold over the red pieces and let cool. Remove the soap from the mold. If necessary, you can slice 1/8" off the top of the soap so the swirl pattern is clearly defined.
