Merci Card — By: Susan Cobb

Susan Cobb

Designer Tip: I used a sponge and smooch to create a painterly effect over a stamped embossed border, swirl motif, and cardstock edges on the card front. I also stamped butterflies and a floral image and painted in the open areas with cape cod (blue), luscious lime, and banana custard (peach) Smooch inks. I added a touch of extra sparkle with Illuminate smooch ink, over some of the stamped images and edges. The illuminate doesn’t add color, but adds an extra sparkle where you want it. You can add it over other smooch inks, stamped images, patterned paper, cardstock, etc.

  1. Trim the card to a 5” square. With the fold at the left, cover the card front with pale yellow cardstock. Stamp the swirls border image over the left side of the card front with the VersaMark pad, then sprinkle with the bark embossing powder. Tap off the excess, then emboss with the heat tool. Stamp and emboss a swirl motif near the bottom edge, 1 ¼” from the right side. Apply some cape cod smooch ink to the cosmetic sponge, then apply the ink over the embossed images as shown. Let dry.
  2. Cut a 4” square from the watercolor color block collage paper and ink the edges brown. Stamp the ruler border image vertically 5/8” from the left edge with brown ink. Stamp the large butterfly image ½” from the right edge and 1 ½” from the top, and a swirl across the top right, both with brown ink. Stamp the flower with words and swirl image in the lower right corner. Stamp a ¾” butterfly image and “Merci” on pale yellow cardstock with brown ink. Trim around the small butterfly into a 1” square, and “Merci” into a small rectangle. Ink edges of each piece brown, then sponge edges with cape cod smooch.
  3. Cut out an orange-brown square with words from remaining paper and ink the edges brown. Glue overlapping the stamped ruler image, ¾” from the bottom. Foam tape the small butterfly square offset over the square. Glue “Merci” as shown. Paint in the butterfly and flower images with Smooch inks as shown. Mat the paper square on terra cotta cardstock, leaving a 1/8” border at top and left side, and ¼” at the bottom, with the right side even with the paper. Ink edges brown. Trim a brown scalloped piece from striped paper and glue to the left edge, overlapping ½” of the left side. Glue even with the right side of the card front, ½” from the bottom. Add Illuminate smooch as desired.
  4. Cut a 2” x 4” rectangle from remaining paper, ink edges and mat on terra cotta. Glue even with the right edge of the inside. Cut a 1” terra cotta square and a blue/green patterned square from the paper and ink the edges. Layer and glue to the paper as shown. Stamp a tiny butterfly on the top square with brown ink, then paint in with smooch. Stamp and emboss the small butterfly/swirl image on pale yellow paper, then stamp words beneath it with brown ink. Sponge cape cod ink over the embossed image. Ink edges brown and glue overlapping the paper on the inside.
